DJ is a Mary Sue character, but if you compare him to Gryphon's

he's not exactly an SI character. He shares some of the author's

fanfic characters. (By the definition I cite, NXE didn't qualify as
a Mary Sue story until DJ became Asuka's love interest.)
But DJ still doesn't have all of the all-seeing all nurturing aspects....
or perhaps he does have a strong leaning this way but he's still messed
up.
I would say BGZone's Bert is FAR more messed up than the REAL Bert.
Some, but not all, Mary Sue stories are SI stories, and vice versa.
For example: BGZone is both a Mary Sue and an SI;
Bert (the one in the story) I think has outgrown a lot of his SI-ness
and simply become another character.....
Henry Jenkins in "Textural Poachers" covers a good deal on fanfiction in
general and other neat things...
