Personally, I think these rules are total bunk.

1) The first and foremost purpose of writing fanfiction is
to please yourself. *You* are your primary audience.

Sure, if you're a narcissist.

2) If you intend to post your fanfiction, then some
attention to grammar and spelling is required, but
that's *all.* Your style is your style, and whether
or not you accept or decline critique on the way
you present your story does not reflect on your
qualities as a writer.

*bzzzt!* Wrong answer. Somewhat.

First off, being that the 'net is primarily written media (despite what
the media pundits say), not only is scrupulous attention to spelling
and grammar required, it is expected. Ditto that for stories - no,
double that. It is also expected that, when writing any sort of
literature, that you give it some sort of story line, plot, etc, and
for God's sakes, format it! There've been plenty of rants on here
during this thread about bad fics, and I can bitch endlessly about fics
that, had they been formatted into something other than a MU* log
style, would probably be very interesting.

3) Fanfiction is nothing more than original fiction
placed within the setting of an existing fictional
work. If you're looking to remain true to the canon,
then follow the rules all you want. If you don't
give a damn about what's canon or not, then shape
your characters whichever way you want to.

Aha! Parody fics! Turn Ranma and Akane into a pair of hackers, Tenchi
is a ham radio operator and a philatelist, Belldandy and Kasumi are
"grrls", and Iczer 3 brings a bit of bright spunk to the Knight Sabers,
while the girls from Rayearth work their magic in the Akira universe.

On second thought, let's not go there, wot?
