It's not a problem in Wordpad.  Just make sure you're editing a text
(not Rich Text, and *definitely* not Word) document.  Save as, close,

I'll take your word on it, but I've *never* had that problem, and all of
my works for at least the past year have been written in either Notepad
or Wordpad (often both, as each particular fic grew beyond Notepad's
memory limits).

I gave up trying to enforce a difference
between the two in my conversations years ago.

You don't generally have to worry about them in conversations. :)

You do if those conversations are in text (either fully, like this one,
or a mixture of text and voice).
