No doubt some people would disagree with thep philosophy advanced
here.  I personally agree with it, but the important idea is that
Mireb, the character portrayed here, thinks this; it's a train of
thought that will affect his character's decisions throughout the
story.

At this time, though, I'm a bit more interested in style commentary
rather than content; we can avoid the nasty philosophical round 
robins this time around.
