Of all the anime series that have had fanfic written about them, I think
that maybe the lead characters are killed in BGC fics at a much higher
per-fic frequency than any other series.

Actually, I beg to differ. I'm pretty sure Eva fics have a higher death toll.
However, considering how the actual series itself ends, that's not so hard to
do.

A high bodycount, yes. But I'm talking about fics where the *main*
characters (not 2nd bananas, such as everyone other than Shinji, Asuka,
Rei, Misato, Ritsu, and Gendo) are killed. Off hand, I can't think of any
Eva fics where this happens, other than ones that might re-tell the actual
events of the anime (which I'm tempted to say don't count, because that's
not the fanfic writer making up the story)

I also said on a per-fic frequency. For example, if you have 5 fics where
one or more KS is killed out of 50 fics written, or 5 fics were one or more
Eva main character is killed out of 100 written, BGC would have the higher
per-fic ratio.

Plus, the KS have this disconcerting tendency to be killed off solely for the
plot device of being resurected in cyborg form.....

I can't think of one BGC fic where they're killed to be resurrected as a
cyborg, so I'd hardly call this a tendency in BGC fics. OTOH, there are
numerous ones where they're killed because 1) what they do is dangerous and
people get killed, or 2) the author doesn't know what to do with a
character so kills her in the first 5 pages.
