There is indeed, but my friend the psychiatric professional is moving and just
packed her copy of the DSM so I couldn't get the proper name from her.  If she 
remembers it, she'll give me a call and I'll post it.

There is a psychiatric condition called Munchausen's Disease in 
which a person makes themself ill or injures themself in order 
to obtain sympathy from others. A better-known form of this 
condition is called Munchausen's By Proxy, in which the person 
who has the condition actually injures his or her own children  
or spouse and then rushes to the hospital with them in order to 
gain the same sympathy.
