NERV was so silent that a pin drop could be heard throughout the command
center. The staff were all looking at the main monitors, hovering above them.
The scene shocked many of them to their very core. For some, it was the
realization that they were not truly in control of the events around them but
for others, it enlightened them to the true danger mankind was in.
On the screen, technicians were watching Evangelion Unit 01. It was in
a state they were now referring to as berserk mode. This was not too
uncommon, for Unit 01 had lost control in the past. What made this incident
different than all the previous times Unit 01 was the way it now behaved.
After regenerating its lost limb and defeating the angel, it had, to the
disgust of many, devoured the fourteenth Angel. Here was not just a machine,
here was a creature created by man, a Frankenstein if you will. A creation
that someday could ultimately destroy mankind itself.
Ritsuko couldn't believe it. Ever since the day Ikari Shinji arrived at
Nerv Headquarters, she had in essence lost control of Eva Unit 01. When the
Eva was in for repairs, nothing seemed out of the ordinary but when it was on
the field of battle, her control seemed to slip. How many times had Shinji
and Unit 01 surprised her? Too many, if you asked her.
She had seen Shinji's Eva fight Angels time and time again. Each time he
would accomplish the impossible, either by regenerating a lost limb or operate
without power while in a berserk rage. Never had she seen Asuka's Unit or
Rei's Unit behave in the same way as Unit 01. Even the Magi could not
comprehend Eva 01's behavior. To Ritsuko, Unit 01 was an enigma. Today had
just confirmed what she already knew.
Looking on as the Evangelion devoured the fourteenth Angel was abominable.
What was more shocking was Shinji's sync rate. It had been increasing
exponentially throughout this exchange, exceeding 400%. It had happened only
once before. About 10 years ago, in the same Eva that Shinji was piloting,
Ikari Yui, mother of Ikari Shinji, had vanished upon reaching that level of
oneness with the Evangelion. Today, staring out at the purple terror, she
knew that Shinji had also vanished. She knew what her duties were to be in
the coming days. Her sole purpose in the next week or so would be to bring
back the pilot of unit 01, Ikari Shinji. Where her mother had failed to
retrieve the pilot of Eva Unit 01, Ikari Yui, Ritsuko would not. She will
retrieve Ikari Shinji. A blood thirsty scream ended Ritsuko's thought
process.
The eyes of the purple menace which had so brightly shined moments
before were now dark. All activities on the part of Unit 01 had ceased. Life
signs were nil. Synchronization rates were also back to 0. Ritsuko was back
in control but for how long?

One of the few individuals left within Nerv Central, looked at the overhead
projection of the events happening outside. "Everything is moving along
perfectly," he said calmly, his expression revealing nothing about the man's
inner thoughts.
"How are you so certain of the outcome?" an older man beside him asked.
"She will not let anything happen to him."
"I see."

31 days later
"The recovery of Unit 01's pilot, Ikari Shinji, shall begin today,"
Ritsuko stated. Today was the last chance Nerv had for the retrieval of
Shinji. The concentration in the LCL was reaching critical levels and soon
all supplies of Oxygen would run out. The primatical state inside the entry
plug would disintegrate with the loss of an Oxygen rich environment. "Begin
operation ORP Maya," shouted Ritsuko.
"I can't believe how much you've done, Sempai," Maya spoke looking over the
data in retrieving the Third Child.
"I can't take all the credit. Most of it was my mother's work."
"You mean something like this happened before?"
"Yes," Ritsuko answered, not taking her eyes off of the screen in front of
her.
"What happened before?" Maya asked.
"It failed," she answered flatly.
"Oh."
"How are the readings?" Ritsuko inquired.
"So far everything is green," Maya answered. Just as she said that, the
screens in front of the two scientist all started to flash warning signals.
"What happened?" Ritsuko yelled out.
"Something is wrong. The entry plug is opening." shouted a desperate
Maya.
"No!!!" Ritsuko shouted. *This was not happening. I'm not going to
fail.* "Abort! Abort operation. Shut down all power to the entry plug."
The situation was getting out of hand. She was losing control again of Unit
01.
"It's too late." Maya shouted as the content of the entry plug spilt
onto the ground.
"Nooooo, Shinji!" cried Misato from the back of the room where she was
observing the rescue. Without another thought, she bolted out of the control
room and down the stairs to Shinji's empty plugsuit and started to hug it.
After a few moments, Misato looked up at the bandaged face of Evangelion Unit
01, "Give back Shinji! Give me back my Shinji!!!!" Misato shouted.

"Where am I?" Shinji asked. The last thing he remembered was fighting the
fourteenth Angel and losing. Looking around he found himself submerged in
something very familiar to LCL except that here it was much warmer and Shinji
could not understand why he felt so safe here.
"You are here."
"Here?"
"This place has no name, Shinji."
"How do you know my name."
"I know everything you know."
"Who are you?"
"I am you."
"I do not understand."
"Why do you pilot an Eva?"
"Because I have to."
"Is that your reason for piloting an Eva?"
"Yes!! If I won't then who will?"
"What about Rei or Asuka? Why not them? Why do you pilot an Eva?"
"OKAY!! I want to belong, to be loved, to be needed. I want someone who
understands what I have to face everyday!" Shinji shouted out, frustrated.

In a flash, Shinji found himself in front of an ice cream shop. Everything
around him seems to be taller.
"What flavor would you like?" the lady holding his hand asked him. She had a
soft loving smile. The sun reflecting off her brown hair only made her look
more like a heavenly angel to the child.
"Ice cream. I want ice cream!" Shinji shouted excitedly.
Laughing, "Alright, alright. You're get your ice cream."
"Yeah! Ice cream!" he shouted out with pleasure and gee.

With another flash of light, Shinji found his hand was again being held by
the same woman.
"This is where I work, Shinji." she explained to the child.
"Wow."
Smiling, "Do you want to see your father?" she asked him.
"Yeah, Otousan!"
"Lets go, honey."
Moments later, "Can I play with the big robot, Okaasan?"
"Someday when you're all grown up, Shinji."
"Promise?"
"Hai."
* * * * *
The third flash of light brought Shinji to a place filled with stone tablets.
"Where is Okaasan, Otousan?" Shinji asked.
"She left us," the man answered.
"When will she be back?" Shinji asked again. He wanted his mother. he
missed her.
"She will not be coming back nor will I. Goodbye my son. Goodbye, Shinji."
"Otousan! Okaasan!" Shinji shouted after his father and later into the
shoulder of his uncle, weeping. "I want them back. I want everything to be
the way it was!"
* * * * *
The fourth flash of light was different from the rest. The one that was
now in front of Shinji just hovered there. As the waves of energy coursed
around the unknown mass like waves, a humanoid shape could be seen.
"Hello, Shinji."
"Who are you?"
"Do you not recognize me?"
Memories of a happier time flashed through Shinji's mind. "Mother?"
"Yes, Shinji."
"What happened. Why are you here?" he asked, confused.
"I'm here because of an accident."
"It was father's fault that you left us," Shinji started to blame his father.
After a moment pause he added silently, "Me."
"I'm sorry for not being there for you."
"Mother, I've missed you so much!" At that he tried to get as close to
Yui as possible. He would have cried out in joy if only a soul had the
ability to shed tears.
"Everytime you pilot this Eva I'm with you, but it is not your time to
leave the mortal plane yet."
"I want to stay with you."
"I'm sorry my son but I promise someday we will be together."
"I'm so lonely. After you died father abandoned me. No one loves me."
"Are you sure? What about Rei, Asuka, Misato and the rest of Nerv?
They are your family now." An image of Misato clinging on to Shinji's empty
uniform appeared.
"Misato," Shinji whispered.
"What about father? He acts like he doesn't want me."
"Your Otousan was crushed when he lost me Shinji. Haven't you noticed
how hard he tries to protect Unit One? In his attempts to save me, he lost a
part of his humanity."
"What about Ayanami?"
"Rei is unique, Shinji. He doesn't fear that he will lose her. I've
tried to protect you as much as possible in the past but now it seems like it
was not enough. The Angels are getting stronger and Shinji, my son, you are
not only in danger of physical pain but also emotional ones. I will always
try to protect you. So long my son!!!"
"Mother, wait!!"
"Go back."
Shinji's vision was suddenly covered in a blinding light.
* * * * *
"Give back Shinji!!" a very dejected Misato chanted over and over.
As if her prayers were answered, the chest of Eva Unit One started to
glow and from some unknown depths, Shinji appeared from its core. Seeing
Shinji, Misato ran toward the fallen pilot only to stop when another young boy
was ejected from Unit One. The second boy seems to be around Shinji's age and
had his black hair in a pigtail.
"What in the world?" was the thought of all the present NERV personnel
as they noticed not one but two set of bodies appearing from the Eva.

In another room, "Was this part of the scenario as well?" the older man
asked.
"No it was not," the man wearing a pair of sun glasses within the dark room
answered.
