It's not a theory.  It's right from the 101 Secrets of Tenchi Muyo book
published in Japan.  

Unfortunately, IIRC, the AIC people say a good portion of that book is 
not cannon or even reliable, since much of it is just "wouldn't it be 
neat if"-isms, such as the bit with Mihoshi's ribbon.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong.
