Oddly enough, although my family's all Taiwanese....
My mother did call her mother 'Kaachan' when my grandmother was
still alive. (She _was_ born while the Japanese had control of the island,
and it wasn't for two years before they lost the war) and it probably came
from that.) Admittedly, it doesn't happen very often at all (using the
-chan suffix for addressing parents), but it does happen. The girl in
_Like the Clouds, Like the Wind_ called her father "Otouchan".
