No need to apologize, Chris. I wasn't offended by what you said,
and I agreed with the contents of your mail for the most part.
The only point where I disagreed was the claim that the knowledge
of the general procedure for writing a story obviated the need for
a more detailed treatment of special cases. I mean, the fact that
the earth is a globe is certainly the most fundamental fact in
geography that everything else is in some way dependent on - but
still, I'm rather glad we have more detailed maps of particular
areas so we can find our way around them.
That said, I can certainly understand how someone who *does*
understand the pitfalls of self-insertion and how to avoid them
can get bored or irritated by essays explaining the obvious to
them (or even contradicting it).
