Okay, why Tempus Skylorn as a pen name, here goes...

Skylorn was a family name in a set of stories that may never see the light
of day.  The name also appeared in a favorite RPG character of mine (I've
noticed on this thread that I'm not the first to think of that).  As for
Tempus, well I've always liked time travel stories and it just sounded cool.

It was either that or Praetor Khan. :-)
