With extensive research and much theorizing, I have solved
the mystery of why Genma and Tarou's clothes, for the most
part, disappear when they transform, and reappear when they
change back. It seems that when their curses are activated, the
magic of the spring seeks to add a considerable amount of mass.
The nearest amount of mass the magic finds happens to be the
clothes.
The molecules of the clothes are transformed by the magick into
cell structures, although the magic within Tarou's dragon-hide
vest resists the change, and stretches to fit. It still needs
more mass, and transforms some of the water, and much of the
surounding air. However, instead of utilizing all the air it
needs for the mass, which would create a vacuum, it only does
so to a limited radius, probably 3-6 inches, before resorting
to the conversion of chi energy, or possibly mana, or another
form of energy, converting it into matter.
In the case of those who lose mass, the magic extends the
lost mass extradimensionally, and retrieves it when exposed to
the stimulus to reverse the change.
