The stars did not shine for him.
The stars seemed to go straight for him, cutting through the
atmosphere, staring at him with the curiosity of laboratory
animals.
They asked the same questions:
"Who are you?"
"Why are you there?"
"Why have we fallen for you, time and again?"
"I don't know," he answered truthfully, and they laughed,
blinking in and out of the universe that was his night sky.
"Aw, this is nuts," he waved off the wails radiated by the
gods, and went back in for the celebration.

She giggled, and it was like the chime of a thousand peals.
"She's got your eyes," she whispered, while he was too busy
swaying the baby in the crook of his arm.
"No, she doesn't," he replied in the same hush.
"Actually, her eye color is a bit more like mine, as she is
related to me..."
"Oh, you wish," another jibed, all without heat.
"Look at that!" A blonde butted her way into the group, and
pointed. "She's asleep..."
"Yeah," he said, finally. Turning as a whole, they set the
new-re-born in her cradle as she sighed, content.
One by one, they slipped away, sobered and content.
The baby turned, a birthmark exposed only briefly, glowing in
the light of electric stars.

"I was wondering... should we tell him?"
The fog in the luxuriously large bath made their turning
motions seem slow and deliberate, as though chastising.
"Tell him what," the gangster-type one said.
"Yeah, tell him what?" the mindlessly silly one said, just
when they didn't need it.
"Well," the serious, boyish one clarified, "about these?"
She pointed to a plainly visible change to her body.
The doctor shook her head slowly, knowing that each of them
had their own marks to bear. "I'm not sure if we should...
everything we know about them are vague superstitions-"
The heiress interrupted. "These 'vague superstitions'
are part of a heritage in which an Empire was founded."
"Yeah," the one who stood naked said, "but the power to
undo that self-same Empire could very well come from it."
The quiet child opined, in a voice filled with ageless
wisdom, "I concur."
Though she stood a youth, her reflection in the water was
of a bonded deity. "That he can tap into the Light Hawk
Wings is proof enough - Tenchi is the chosen one."
The six women from the stars knew then that only time was
the barrier, that time for Mayuka to grow and to eventually
bear the burden of guardianship, as this universe's
embodiment, her father, would be called to face the
champions of other universes.
