Well, this was when humor was a lot more of the driving force behind each
chapter. I'd like to think that I kept a high level of humor throughout the
series (well, until the last three chapters or so.)

   Not that the current turn it's taken is BAD, mind you, but the humor
   is welcome.  And funny in many, many places,

   seemingly throwaway gag of Ryoga meeting up with Doctor Who...

Well, several times Ryouga made references about running through time and
space with the Doctor. The problem was everyone but Ukyou thought he was
delusional, even when Daleks came a knockin'. 

but
   comedy, by its nature, doesn't entail changes or hardship or
   anything to inspire character growth, so it's probably for the
   better that the series changed.

Yep. One of the reasons I had to switch to prose.

But this part is still good enough
   to command 15 or 16 out of 20.
