Jane,

I liked your story, even if you did kill off Kasumi. You didn't mention
Soun's funeral at all. Everyone knows that if Kasumi died, Soun would
pass away either from grief or Akane's cooking. :-) (Too all of the
humor-impaired individuals out there who are now saying Akane could cook
at the end of the series, that was a joke! ... REALLY!)

C&C? Well.. I occasionally felt that you overused the passive voice.
For instance:

I was at a loss. I was the only person who had seen
where the sword
had come from. It wouldn't be worth the pain to make
her go through
all of that again just to prove her guilt. I watched
her sob for five
minutes, before calling a friend of mine. She's a
psychologist
specialized in dealing with grief, guilt, and the loss
of loved ones.

See what I mean with those first two sentences? A better construction
might have been:

I now knew where the sword that caused Kasumi's death came from and yet
I simply stood there, unable to perform my duty.

See? I took it out of the passive voice and (I think) made it much more
effective.

Oh, the last sentence could be read as going from past tense to present
tense. I read it "She's" as "She is" rather than "She was" because I
assumed the protagonist's friend still practiced. :-)
Maybe:

A psychologist who had specialized in dealing with grief, guilt, and the
loss of loved ones, she would be able to help Ms. Tendo heal from this
horrible accident.

Or some such.

I hope this helps you,

Mike Allen
