The darkness of the room was checked only by the faint light of half a
dozen smoking candles. Thick clouds of incense drifted malevolently
through the air from a lit brazier in the center of the candles. Chalk
outlines crept around the candles.
A wooden door opened and permitted illumination to enter the room
briefly. A tall shrouded figure entered the room. In his hands he bore a
small, aged book. His cloak dragged in the sand in the ring as he walked
into the circle of candles and sat down. A smaller figure followed the
first and began to sit as well.
	"Wait! Close the door."
	"Alright."
The short figure closed the door and sat down by its elder. Shroud
began to leaf through the pages of the book. The other leaned over his
shoulder.
"Flip back one, that looked interesting."
	"This is serious."
"Well, that looked seriously interesting. I mean that thing with the
dummy and those"
"Please get away from the book and let me do my work. Check the
candles, or something."
The smaller figure picked up two of the candles and stared at them
intently.
"Put those candles down! You're here to help me with the ritual. If you
don't stop fooling around, I'll have to do it alone."
	"Okay, don't get upset."
Short replaced the candles in the circle and began to inspect the sand
surrounding the candles, grumbling in the act.
Shroud motioned the other to step back.
"Alright, it's time. I want you to hold the book open to this page. You
will read from here to here. Do not turn the page and do not read ahead.
Once you begin, read at a constant pace and do not take your eyes of the
words."
"Yes, great master."
"If all goes well, I shall finally contact him tonight."

Tofu: MAster of Darkness Chapter One
	Awakening
**********************************************************************
The Nerima ward of Tokyo woke up to a beautiful morning. Songbirds
filled the air with cheerful strains. The cherry blossoms would soon be
in bloom. Children awoke to prepare for a rigorous day of school, and
green, eldritch smoke drifted from a crater the size of a small, poorly
lit abandoned warehouse that would no longer be taking up valuable
space.
The firemen had rushed to the scene of the explosion three hours before,
but they had been unable to accomplish much. There was little that could
be done anyway. The resulting fire had consumed what little remained of
the building, but there was no damage elsewhere. Two survivors had been
pulled from the wreckage. Both were in critical condition at the Nerima
hospital.
Fire Marshal Suzaku reflected on the strange incident. No cause could be
discerned. The odd smoke indicated that a chemical experiment may have
been involved, but there was simply no evidence, save a few twisted
shards of metal. It was possible that arson had caused the fire and some
strongly combustible substance was caught in it, since there was no
trace of any explosives.
The fire marshal was lost in thought when he stepped on a small object.
He looked where he had placed his foot and found a small violet stone. A
single jagged crack tore through the stone's surface. The stone seemed
almost translucent, but opaque at the same time. Suzaku absently slipped
it into a pocket and moved on.
*****
Ranma Saotome, high school student, age17, and certified freak of
nature, walked down the stairs of the Tendo home. He was ready for his
morning pre-breakfast workout with his father.
As he passed the kitchen, Nabiki called out to him, "Ranma, come here
and take a look at this."
	"What is it?"
Nabiki was kneeling by the table; she was clutching a coffee cup in one
hand and pointing to the television with the other.
Images of a burned out lot filled the screen.
"There was an explosion right here in Nerima, Ranma. It was just a
block away from doctor Tofu's place."
Kasumi turned from her breakfast making to look at the TV as a reporter
came on screen.
" word that the two victims of the blast were identified. Both were
taken to the Nerima Hospital in critical condition. One, an elderly
Chinese woman, recovered consciousness briefly and gave her name as
Cologne. The other has yet to awake, but has been positively identified
as Dr. Ono Tofu, a local chiropractor."
A crash resounded through the kitchen.
Kasumi saw that everyone was looking at her. Slivers of a shattered
rice bowl lay at her feet. Kasumi broke off her stare at the television,
which had now moved on to a story about teaching pandas to play shogi,
and bent down to clean the mess on the floor.
Ranma watched Kasumi silently sweep the rice and bowl shards up. She
then returned to the breakfast preparation, ignoring the moisture around
her eyes.
Akane stepped into the kitchen and sensed that something was out of the
ordinary.
	"What's going on?"
Nabiki glanced at Kasumi and put down her coffee.
"Why don't we take a little trip to the hospital?"
*****
The room was all black and white marble. A cross was formed in the
ground by the intersection of four marble posts, two white, two black.
Inside the cross was a double circle with runes carved between the
borders. The room was split in half, the border intersecting the cross
diagonally. One side had a white floor with black markings and the other
side black with white markings. Black candles with white wicks burned
around half of the outer edge of the circle, their counterparts likewise
on the other side. In the center of the circle, the dividing line became
a sine curve with opposite colored dots in the concave parts. Two discs
were suspended from above the center, one white and one black.
He was standing on the dividing border, just outside the circle. His
robes were ash grey. He saw a hooded man similarly garbed sat in lotus
position inside the circle.
He was forced to avert his eyes and looked towards the walls. It was
impossible to tell whether they were near or distant, but they seemed to
lose some of their solidity. Men in white robes seemed to form from the
white walls and black robes appeared from the ebon walls.
The grey robe lifted his face to him. His hood slid back enough to view
his face, but he could only make out the man's eyes. As the white and
black robes knelt upon the outer edge of the circle, the mysterious
figure's frigid grey orbs locked upon his eyes. The rest of the man'
face was indistinct, but he knew that he had seen those eyes before.
The black and white robes began to chant. Grey suddenly stood and raised
his
arms. He called out in a shattering voice "See as it was!". Cracks
appeared in the marble and grey robe's garment began to draw in light.
The robe became a blinding red with green trim. The cracks grew
*****
Tofu opened his eyes. The world was all white and possessed only one
white figure and one black. He heard a sound that he later realized were
the words "about bloody time". Tofu found that he was lying down and the
black figure was leaning over him while the white moved around several
feet away. He addressed the black figure.
"Where am I? Who are you?"
""
The white figure was moving towards him. At the same time, the black
took a step back and became indistinct from its surroundings in his
vision . The white figure resolved itself into a nurse and he realized
that he was in a hospital room, but for a moment he thought that he had
seen another white image.
"How do you feel? Let me check you over and then I'll go get the
doctor."
"What am I doing here?" Tofu asked, but he suddenly remembered the
events of
the past night.
He found that he was in the most unremarkable hospital room he had ever
seen. The single feature of note about the room was that it was so
unexceptional that it was uncanny. The nearly unadorned white walls, the
suspended television, the adjustable bed, all these were completely
normal.
"Would you like me to do anything for you before I get the doctor?" The
nurse
stared at him with the patience of a mother elephant.
"Eh?" Tofu blinked and remembered where he was. "Was there a anyone else
brought here with me?"
"Yes dear, your friend is here too. She's in a room just down the hall.
I'll be back in a minute if you don't need anything."
She? Tofu thought as the nurse left. Who is "she"? What happened to
Hikaru? Tofu thought as he swiveled his head to check himself in the
mirror.
His face was red and a scar crept from his right cheek to his brow, but
he was otherwise whole. Well, I suppose it could have been worse, he
reflected.
"It would have been a lot worse if you had been sitting where I was."
"Gosunkugi-kun?"
"There's a reason they didn't find me. There wasn't much left to find. I
mean, you got off easy"
"Where are you?"
The reflection in the mirror paled and the eyes became large and sunken
with dark circles around them..
The mouth moved.
"Where do you think I am? You blew me up."
*****
Akane held Kasumi's hand as they walked in with Ranma following through
the doors of the hospital main entrance. She carried wrapped flowers in
her other hand. Kasumi's eyes had taken on a distant look as they neared
the building.
"Don't worry older sister, he'll be fine. When we called they said that
he was stable."
The elder girl recovered and looked at her sister.
"Yes, he will be fine."
Akane stared at Kasumi for a moment and then walked up to the desk.
"Um, excuse me, we're here to see a patient, Ono Tofu. He was brought
here this morning. When I called I was told that he was just going to be
moved out of intensive care."
"Just one second," the receptionist typed the name into her computer,
"He's on the fourth floor in room number two."
Akane bowed and thanked the woman and the three walked towards the
elevators.
*****
He had attempted the ritual with the help of a local high school
student. Hikaru Gosunkugi was an extremely inquisitive boy who felt
strongly drawn to the arts of magic.
The boy had come to him under the most unusual circumstances. He had
shown up at Tofu's clinic one evening with a glassy look in his eyes and
a book under his arm. The book was the same that Tofu had had
mysteriously stolen from his home days before. Gosunkugi had no
knowledge of how he had found the book and he later seemed unsure about
his reasons for finding the doctor.
Despite the fact that he resembled nothing more than a man-shaped dead
fish, Tofu could sense power in the boy. The doctor took him on as an
assistant to aid in his research into magic.
"You really should have prepared a little better before trying that
ritual out. The book said it was dangerous, but no"
What kind of painkillers am I on? Tofu wondered. It would have required
major head trauma to cause this hallucination otherwise.
"Are you listening?" The face in the mirror, the face that was not quite
his own, took on an exasperated look. "Hey, this is important! I'm
trying to talk to you from partway beyond the grave and you're not
paying attention."
Realistic hallucination, my own image is speaking to me with Gosunkugi's
voice. Definitely drugs. What kind of drugs could it be?
"You do realize that you are thinking loud enough for me to hear, don't
you?"
The doctor resolutely ignored him.
"Oh, yeah, I can see that getting you to listen is going to be fun."
*****
The clean white halls sent chills up Ranma's spine. He was often mildly
injured, but hospitals were foreign to him. The absolute sterility was
unnerving enough, but the almost palpable sensation of weakness was far
worse. The pervasive aura of infirmity seemed to sap at his very soul.
The pale, lifeless walls stretched on and on. Electric lighting left no
shadows. The lights were too bright, but gave no heat. Ranma felt cold.
His body felt heavy. His heart was pumping a liquid far colder than
blood throughout his body.
The invisible ground invited him to rest.
"Ranma? Are you alright? Ranma!"
Akane caught Ranma as he lost his balance.
"Ranma, what's wrong?"
"Just dizzy. Back off, I'm okay. I don't need some tomboy carrying me
around like I can't walk."
Akane's facial expression chilled.
"Well, if you don't want my help, I won't waste my time."
"Good, I" Ranma stumbled and caught himself on the wall.
Concern found its way back into Akane 's face.
"Ranma, you're not well. Let me help you, please.
Ranma offered no response, but did not resist as Akane put her arm
around his shoulders to support him. On touching his skin, she found
that it felt like ice.
Kasumi watched silently.
*****
"Look, I know that most people don't talk much when they're dead, but
I'm not really dead, at least not in the normal way. Well, actually I
am, but most people don't get stuck in Limbo when that happens."
"You're in Limbo?"
"You are paying attention! I thought that you didn't believe I was
real."
"I still don't, but I'm getting bored of listening to you talk, and I
figure that if I listen for a bit, you'll go away."
The reflection scowled.
"Allow me to explain the entire situation clearly. You attempt to learn
the secrets of a long dead wizard. To do this, you try to reach him in
the afterlife through one of his own little tricks. I help you in your
little ritual. You never let me look at the book, which was probably for
the better, and you never tell me that I have to read in Latin, which
was not. I am unprepared and you are not performing the ritual properly.
Everything becomes one giant magic blazing hellfart. Are you following
this?"
"Why did the explosion get you and not me? I was closer to the brazier
and the crystal."
"You were ground zero. It erupted outward from around you. Don't ask me
why, magic likes to be silly. Anyway, through your recklessness, I get
atomized. To add insult to incineration, the spell actually takes effect
and I get stuck here. Just in case you were wondering, I do not like
this place all that much."
"What is Limbo like?"
"Imagine being a spectator at one big never ending golf game played by
ninety year olds. In the Sahara Desert"
"I see."
"Anyway, what I want to tell you is that you made contact."
"What do you mean?"
"The big ancient sorcerer guy. He knows you're looking for him.
*****
"Kasumi, something's wrong with Ranma. You go on ahead to Dr. Tofu.
I'll find someplace for him to rest and then I'll meet up with you at
Dr. tofu's room. Take the flowers with you."
Akane attempted to speak matter-of-factly, since Ranma was probably just
winded (Ranma tired?) or coming down with something (Ranma sick?). A
slight quaver in her voice, however, betrayed the anxiety that tore at
her heart. Something was wrong, but she could not ease the feeling that
it was far worse than a mere flu.
Kasumi cast a worried eye on Ranma before nodding to her sister, picking
up the flowers that she had dropped, and walking down the hall. Akane
spied a bench and eased her fiancee down onto it.
"Just let me catch my breath. I'll be fine."
"You stubborn idiot, you are not fine. Wait here while I go get you a
nurse."
Ranma lifted his gaze to her eyes as she turned away from him. He caught
Akane's sleeve.
"A-Akane," he hesitated for a moment, "don't leave me."
*****
Tofu's looked at his reflection. It seemed to have returned to normal.
He was certain that it would speak again the moment he let down his
guard.
The conversation had worn Tofu out in his less than satisfactory state.
He leaned back in the hospital bed , but attempted to keep his eyes
open. Odd, how hospital blankets were never thick enough to keep out the
chill
*****
The tower rose into the sky in an effort to spite the lowly ground. The
surrounding ramparts seemed weak and ineffective, but all knew that they
were merely for show. The tower needed no defensive barrier. Men wearing
hooded black robes occasionally passed through the gates, but he knew
that they were not clergy, at least not like Father Lucius.
His family's small home was part of the village that slept by the
tower's ankles. The villagers treated the tower with fear and respect.
No man would ever walk into the shadow left by the edifice.
The tower held mystery and thus appealed to his young mind. He was
intrigued by the way that the other villagers treated it. He faced the
tower and, with a feeling of destiny, pledged to make his way inside.
The dark clouds that had swept in over the tower moments before rumbled
in assent.
He heard the sound of a door. It was his mother returning.
*****
His mother walked in through the doorway no, it was not his mother. He
knew the sweet face. She was one dear to his heart; it was Ceci Kasumi.
Kasumi? What was Kasumi doing in this hospital? Who was Cecilia? Tofu
felt the sleep pass from his eyes.
Kasumi neared the bed and paused for a moment. She looked around the
room and up at the lights, then back at Tofu. She stared for a moment
before speaking.
"Very good morning, Tofu-sensei, how do you feel?"
That gentle face the long brown hair she was so beautiful. Those
innocent eyes, so understanding. Soft smiling lips. He would die to put
his arms around her. Her face surrounded him. A warm, gentle cloud
settled in his heart and mind.
Kasumi radiated a gentle golden glow. Warmth emanated from her smile.
Her eyes were the seas, a never ending expanse. Her dark tresses were
rippling waves.
I want to be a part of this exquisite creature.
Needles jabbed his arms. Daggers of ice tore down his spine. His entire
body was punctured and laid open to the freezing wind.
Tofu once again saw Kasumi, but she was now just a woman. She was
standing at his side. The room was once again the very model of a
perfect hospital room.
"Kasumi, it's good to see you."
*****
"I think I can walk now."
Ranma braced himself with the wall and stood up. He set a foot forward,
then the other.
"C'mon, lets catch up with Kasumi." Ranma slowly began to make his way
down the hall.
Moments later, he was back on the ground.
Akane helped him back up and supported him on his feet.
"Ranma, this is serious. You're not going to be able to make it to
Tofu's room."
"Sure I can," he grunted in pain, "it'll just take me a little longer."
Akane was torn between concern and the desire to thoroughly brutalize
him with a hammer for his stubbornness.
"Son in law?"
Akane and Ranma turned their heads in unison to the source of the voice.
An elderly woman the size of a large teddy bear and a girl with purple
hair peered at them from a room.
"Ranma, is you! I so happy!"
Ranma yelped as Akane dropped him to the floor.
*****
Akane helped Ranma over to the room's single chair, but before she could
help him to sit, Shampoo was at his side.
"Ranma, what you doing here?"
"Oh, ah Shampoo, I um"
Akane interrupted abruptly. "We are here to see Dr. tofu, who was
injured in the blast this morning; and, Shampoo, do you have to have
your arms wrapped around Ranma to ask him questions?"
"Violentpervertgirl just jealous because Ranma no let her touch him."
"Shampoo, I can't move at the moment." Ranma's face reddened as he
looked at Shampoo, then paled when he saw Akane's face.
"Ranma, act more like husband."
Small microbacteria in the air plunged tiny daggers of carbon atoms into
their vitals upon being caught by Akane's glare. Flowers set in an
alcove behind Akane caught fire. Akane became synonymous with the color
red.
"At least leave the room if you want to act like that." Akane prepared
to deliver a skyscraper toppling blow.
"Stop girl, now is not the time." Cologne's staff had materialized in
the path of her fist with the old crone at the other end.
"Calm yourself, Akane. You must all listen to me. There is evil in the
air, can't you feel it?"
"Great Grandmother, how you get out bed? You know much injured, doctor
say no can move." The purple-haired amazon disengaged her viselike grip
from Ranma's shoulders and rushed to her elder.
While the old woman's tough, wrinkled skin hid most of the marks, Akane
now realized that cuts and bruises ran all along her face. She watched
Shampoo aid her grandmother back into the bed and under the sheets and
she noticed the casts that covered her right arm and both legs. Cologne
truly was a remarkable martial artist to have moved so quickly when she
shouldn't have been able to move at all.
"Shampoo, Akane, Ranma, there is much we must discuss and I am weary.
Let us leave trivial rivalries aside for now. This man, Tofu, and all of
us are in great danger."
*****
"Kasumi dear, I appreciate that you came to see me, but"
The woman hesitated. "How are you feeling, doctor?" She blushed lightly.
"Oh my, I know that must sound odd, I mean, I feel odd saying it, that
is"
"Kasumi."
She paused
"Kasumi, it's nice to see you."
"I brought you some flowers. I hope you like them." Her blush deepened.
She had never seen him like this before and she was uncertain what to
make of it or how to act.
She walked closer to his side. And stopped dead. Cold pricked her skin.
Something was very wrong.
"Kasumi?"
She looked into Tofu's brown eyes.
Grey eyes.
*****
"Well, you sure are good at scaring off the women. Either that, or
Kasumi hadn't been to the bathroom in about a week."
"Oh, you're back. Wait a second, you aren't in my reflection. Where are
you?"
"Check the flowers."
Tofu looked at the flowers that Kasumi had left before excusing herself.
What a disgustingly cute little puppy that was in the wrapping. It was
making faces at him.
"Have you no sense of taste, Gosunkugi-kun?"
"None whatsoever."
"Hey, um, Tofu-san, I gotta go. There's someone coming to see you."
The puppy waved cutely and returned to normal.
Tofu looked at the door to await his next visitor.
*****
Cologne sighed wearily. Why couldn't this have happened when she was
younger? She had acquired many skills over the years and the power and
wisdom she had gained were normally a great advantage, but she simply
lacked the stamina she had eighty years ago, and now she was crippled.
Cologne could only hope that Shampoo was up to the task.
A hand waved in front of her face. "Hey, old ghoul, you croaked on us or
something?"
Ranma. She would have to use him if they were to resolve this situation.
It had once been a matter for the Joketsuzoku, but she had no choice.
Besides, she still had every intention of making him one of them.
"Hey!" Ranma cried as he evaded the deadly arc of Cologne's staff. When
he landed, Cologne sat down and faced Shampoo, Ranma, and Akane.
"Listen! I will tell the three of you of lore held sacred by the elders
of the Joketsuzoku tribe. It has been passed on for countless
generations, but due to its importance, only a few have ever known of
it. Shampoo, under other circumstances I would have passed this
knowledge on to you when I felt you were ready. I must tell you now only
because of great need."
"She's stalling because she doesn't remember. The old ghoul is trying to
make something up," Ranma mock whispered.
"Shut up Ranma, this sounds important."
"Akane is correct, son in law, please take her advice." The old woman
wiped the sweat off her brow with a gnarled hand. "These lines contain
the bulk of the legend:"
The Sun sinks and a man of Shadow comes from the twilight.
Shadow hides from Sun and Moon.
Earth brings water, Air brings Dragon.
Dragon is made Earth.
Man of Fire and Man of Shadow duel beneath Sun and Moon.
	Shadow is made Water.
"See, I told you she was making it all up."
"The legend says that these lines speak of a magician who visited the
tribe many centuries ago. Little else is known, but, you should know
that he was very powerful."
"I'll bet his shows were expensive. It must have cost an entire yak to
go see him perform."
"Shut up, Ranma!" Akane slapped her fiancee on the back of the head.
"Here, let Shampoo try." Shampoo likewise slapped him on the back of the
head. "That fun. I always wonder what feel like do that."
Cologne resumed. "Shampoo, the leaders of the tribe have been
responsible for guarding the legend for countless generations. I am
'indisposed' for the time being and it is up to you to fulfill an
ancient promise."
"You must return to China, great granddaughter. And, You, Ranma, you
must accompany her for the sake of those you love.
*****
Twilight came. Tofu's eyes were on the door when his window blew in. A
flock of ravens smashed the glass and flew into the room. As the birds
dispersed, a figure became visible in their midst.
The man who walked towards him was wearing a finely cut black suit.
Sunglasses covered his eyes and long black hair framed his face. A dark
grey mantle lay over his black trench coat and grey gloves sheathed his
hands. Long black hair was draped down his neck.
He stopped by Tofu's bedside and looked in the mirror.
"Do you think that these sunglasses suit me?"
	"What?"
"I asked you if these sunglasses suit me.
Tofu shrugged and nodded in assent. "Who are you, and why did you break
my window?"
"Sorry, I wanted to make a good entrance."
"So you flew in through my closed window?"
"No, I was actually in here for quite some time, I just thought it would
look more impressive if it seemed like I flew in and came from the
birds, so I called the ravens here. I think that I need cooler looking
sunglasses if I want the effect to work. These just don't look right.
More to the point, I can't see very well with them on. As for your
window"
Tiny glimmering threads appeared in the space where the windowpane had
been and attached themselves to the stray shards of glass. Within
moments, the glass had been pulled back into the window and had reformed
itself perfectly.
	He pulled off the sunglasses.
"Anyway, Care to talk?" he asked the doctor as he slipped his shades
into a pocket.
	"Just who are you?"
"Ah, the brave lad wants to know, does he?" The man in dark clothing
turned to the small table near Tofu's bed. "Do you mind?" he asked,
signaling the flowers with a nod.
"Um, sure, I guess." Tofu replied reluctantly.
The dark clad man plucked the petals off a flower and tore off the
lower tip of the stem, he then placed that end of the stem between his
lips. The other end took on a bright orange glow. He inhaled deeply
before removing the stem from his mouth. As he exhaled a faint green
mist, he replied to the doctor.
"In case you care about my name, it's Mallory. Corwyn Mallory. I
suppose I'm here as a messenger." He looked out the window and sighed
longingly. Mallory replaced the green rod in his mouth and took another
puff. "I really don't understand this country. It's too cheerful. As
cities go, Tokyo's not bad, but what's with all the frogs and ducks and
puppies?"
Tofu waited patiently while Mallory made use of his specialty smoke a
few more times. He was struck by the fact that the other man's eyes
seemed to have been colored green by the process.
"I suppose I ought to get my business done with. I was told by my
employer to instruct you to make your way to a spot in China."
"Why? How do I know that I can trust you?"
"You will be meeting a gentleman of some importance there. He will
provide you with some necessary information."
Tofu's voice took on an excited tone. "What do you mean? Where is
this?"
"You'll find it." Corwyn pressed the smoldering end of the flower into
Tofu's forehead."
The doctor's voice became subdued. "I should have known it would be
there."
"Well, I best be off. I don't want to be here any longer than I must."
Corwyn stepped over to the door and opened it. "By the way, how do you
think I would look with a cape? I think it might work better than this."
He flicked what remained of the flower at Tofu as he made his way out
the door.
When did that thing become a stub? I never saw it shorten, and it left
no ash. Well, that hardly matters. I must now prepare for my destiny.
Ono Tofu, onetime chiropractor and scholar, dressed and prepared for
his clandestine journey to Jusenkyo.
end part 1
