This brings up one thing I would like to know: While it is obvious
that defeating a Joketsuzoku requires an _outland_ male to marry her,
why would defeating her be a _requirement_ to marry her?

It's an abstract extension of the original law that we hear in the manga
and anime.  Needless to say, it's not canonical but purely fanfic
convention.

	In this case though, it's also a question of Shampoo wanting to 
minamise the odds that her family would veto whoever she chose.  If all 
she could say was that she wanted to marry him, it would carry much less 
weight than saying village law required her to marry him.  And since I 
had Colougne already decide that she wanted Shampoo to marry Ranma, she's 
going to need a strong argument to get her approval for marying anyone 
else.
