Employing Lovecraft's method of prose would, in my opinion,
absolutely not work for this story.  None of the main
characters act, think, or otherwise behave as any Lovecraft
main character usually would, i.e. a well-read gent from
the early 1900s.

The other thing to consider is the creeping insanity issue of Lovecraft's
works.  Most of the stories had the idea that mere exposure to these
ancient things would drive men mad.  All of Lovecraft's heroes ended up
dead or in the sanitarium for their troubles.  Randolph Carter I think was
his longest lived character, but he eventually got killed saving the world
if I remember correctly.
