One problem is that different people have different ideas as to how much
descriptiveness is appropriate.  Tom Clancy is one of my favorite writers
and I've never thought of him as being over-descriptive.

Another problem is that different contexts can have different appropriate
levels of descriptiveness.  For example, I probably wouldn't want to read
a Ranma 'fic that goes into the level of detail that Clancy uses.  I don't
know anything about martial arts, so the story would lose my interest.
But again that's just a personal preference.
