NERV command center. The faces of everyone there are tense.

Misato:
"Maya, give me a status report."

Maya:
"Pattern blue. It's an Angel."

Flash to a forest. A girl in the same school uniform Rei usually dressed in
falls a couple of feet and touches down silently. Her red hair is down,
unbound. Flash to eyes. She looks forward. The eyes are blue. Flash back to
original scene. Beside her, Chie touches down as well. Flash behind them.
They are in a forest on top of a mountain overlooking Tokyo-3. The angel is
moving in. (from now until the screen flashes to NERV, when a character says
something, flash to their face.)

Chie:
"Oririel. Where are we?"

Oririel:
"A world very much like the one you originated in."

Chie:
"What's different?"

Oririel:
"In this one, there is another boy. He would recognize me if he saw me."

Chie:
"Is he another Angel?"

Oririel:
"No. And he has not met me before. But I know why he would recognize me."

Chie:
"Why?"

Oririel:
"I can't tell you that yet."

Flash to NERV command center.

Misato:
"What is the status of the Eva pilots?"

Ritsuko: "Asuka, Shinji and Toji will be here in about 10 minutes. Ayanami
and the new pilot, Saotome, are preparing now."

Misato: "What did you say? You're not seriously thinking about sending Ranma
out there, are you?"

Ritsuko:
"Commander Ikari's orders. The other pilots aren't here yet."

Maya:
"Entry plugs for Unit 00 and Unit 03 have been inserted."

Ritsuko (worried):
"He's never piloted an Eva before."

Misato:
"Neither did Shinji, but you still made him pilot Unit 01."

Ritsuko didn't reply, looking down upon Unit 03

Flash to Ranma's face, then moving back to reveal that he's only wearing
boxers. He's standing in front of a divider, basically a cloth curtain on a
metal bar. Rei is on the other side. The silhouette she cast upon the curtain
made it clear that she is in the process of taking off her clothes.

Ranma looks at the suit they gave him.

Ranma: "Can't believe a place like this couldn't even give me the right size
uniform, and here I am agreeing to wear one of these stupid looking suits.
Rei. Can I ask you something?"

Rei:
"Yes."

Ranma:
"I think this suit is too big for me."

Rei:
"One size fits all."

Ranma:
"(pause) What do you mean?"

Rei walks around the divider, completely nude. Ranma stares.

Rei:
"What's wrong?"

Ranma:
"Y-You're naked!"

Rei:
"Is that a problem?"

Ranma:
"Yes!"

Rei looked blank for a moment.

Rei: "There's a button on your left wrist, push it and the suit will adjust
itself."

She walked back around divider.

Ranma:
"Thanks Rei. . . . Rei?"

Rei:
"Yes?"

Ranma:
"You really do look kawaii."

Flash to interior of the EVA 03 plug. The LCL is rising. Ranma, in his body
suit, is holding his breath as his head goes under.

Misato:
"You can breathe now, Saotome-kun."

Ranma couldn't hold his breath any longer. He spit out the bubbles.

Misato:
"How do you feel? Are you ready?"

Ranma:
"I think I'm going to be sick."

Misato (laughing):
"Boy, are you manly!"

Ranma (shouting):
"What'd you say? I'M A MAN!"

Flash to Misato's face. She's surprised. Flash back. Ranma's scowling.

Ranma (grouchy):
"Yeah, I'm ready."

Flash to NERV command center.

Ritsuko:
"Set language parameters to Japanese, Maya. Begin activation of Eva Unit 03!"

Maya:
"Beginning activation."

Aoba:
"Approaching border line."


Maya: "Border line reached......and passed. Activation complete. Sync rate is
at 28%."

Ranma:
"That's good is it?"

Misato (concerned, but attempting to mask it):
"It's okay Ranma. Well within operational standards."

Ritsuko walks over to Misato.

Ritsuko (whispering):
"Don't tell him how low he is."

Misato (harsh whisper):
"What do you take me for? An idiot?"

Ritsuko sighs. Misato looks back at screen.

Misato:
"Rei, Ranma, get ready. Launch EVAs!!"

Begin standard battle music. Sparks fly as both the blue and black Evas are
catapulted to the surface. They came to a clanking stop when they hit, and
the necks of the EVAs momentarily straightened up, then settled back into
normal position. Surrounded by the buildings of Tokyo-3, the angel (Angel #4,
but called #15 in this fic) was before them. Flash to Misato.

Misato: "Rei, keep the angel away from Ranma to give him enough time to get
acquainted when the Eva. Ranma try to see if you can make the Eva walk."

Flash to Rei

Rei:
"Yes, Commander"

Flash to Ranma. He's desperately shaking the handles of the EVA, trying to
get it to move.

Ranma (thinking): "Walk. All I have to do is make this thing walk. Why isn't
it walking? Come on, walk darn it!"

Misato:
"Anytime now Ranma. Rei is going to need help."
The EVA begins to move sluggishly. Flash to Misato.

Misato:
"Yes! Way to go Ranma!"

Flash to Ranma:

Ranma: "Arg, this stupid piece of junk to broken. It's not moving fast
enough. Is it rusted or something? Why couldn't you give me an Eva like
Rei's. Something that works so I can go and beat the crap out of that Angel?
Stupid machine, move!"

Flash to Ritsuko.

Ritsuko (angry):
"That Eva is working perfectly! Stop complaining and go help Rei!"

Flash to Maya.

Maya:
"Shinji, Asuka and Toji have just arrived."

Flash to Misato and Ritsuko, side view with Ritsuko in front. Misato turns
toward Ritsuko, a surprised expression on her face.

Misato:
"Thanks Maya."

Flash to Gendo, in his normal position. Fuyuzuki is standing beside him,
hands behind back.

Gendo:
"I thought he might do better than this."

Fuyuzuki:
"So did I. What should we do?"

Gendo: "Saotome is expendable. The Eva is not. (Louder) Major Katsuragi,
eject the entry plug and power down the Eva. Saotome is of no help and I do
not want the Angel seeing Unit 03 as a threat."

Flash to Misato.

Misato:
"But Commander, give Ranma a few more minutes. I know he'll pull through."

Flash to Gendo.

Gendo:
"Do as I ordered, Major."

Misato turns toward the main screen.

Misato: "Ranma, I sorry but we are ejecting the entry plug. You're not having
much progress and Unit 01 and 02 will be ready soon. We can not endanger the
Eva. Maya, eject the entry plug."

Flash to Unit 01, presently in combat with angel.
Unit 01 dodges one of the angel's ribbon-like arms.
Flash to Rei.

Rei:
"Excuse me, Major. Where is Unit 03?"

Secondary display screen flashes on left of Rei. It shows Misato.

Misato: "I'm sorry Rei. Ranma didn't sync well enough with the Eva to be of
any use. We're ejecting the entry plug. Stand by for Unit 01 and 02. They
should be there in about 5 minutes."

Flash to Rei's face. A pause.

Rei:
"I understand."

Back to display screen. The entry plug of Unit 03 gets ejected. Flash to Unit
00. It gets hit by a ball of light and falls backward. Flash to Gendo's
mouth, beneath his hands. His teeth are clenched. Flash to interior of Unit
03's entry plug. The lights turn red. Ranma looks in horror Unit 00 gets hit
by the ball of light in the secondary display screen. Flash to Ranma's
stricken face.

Ranma:
"Rei!!!"

Flash to Unit 00 trying to avoid the next blast. The cord is caught by some
falling buildings and is torn from the EVA. Flash to the main screen in the
NERV Command Center. The counter reads five minutes, then begins counting
down. Flash to Unit 00 charging toward the Angel with Prog Knife in hand.

Flash to Gendo, in normal position but with light reflecting off glasses.

Gendo:
"How much longer until Unit 01 and Unit 02 are ready for launch?"

Flash to Maya.

Maya:
"They are preparing to launch in 2 minutes."

Misato:
"Prepare a recovery team for Unit 03's entry plug!"

Aoba:
"Yes, Major."

Flash to Unit 00. It rams the Prog Knife into the Angel's AT field. The AT
field doesn't give way very easily. Sparks fly as the AT field rips apart.
The AT field vanishes before it gives away entirely. Unit 00 slices its left
arm off and bumps the angel into a building with its shoulder. There's a
shrieking sound as the angel flies back. Flash to a wall of a building. Blood
splatters all over it. Flash to Angel. It's left a trail of destruction all
along its path of flight. The smaller buildings have been completely
shattered, and the large one against its back is severely cracked. There is
blood over it. The angel gets up slowly. Flash to Unit 00. It's also been
damaged from the impact. It recovers fast though, and gets ready for another
charge. Flash to Angel. Unit 00 charges at it, knife in hand. A ball forms
before the Angel just as Unit 00 gets within reach to stab it again. The ball
shoots off in Unit 00's direction and hits it in the stomach. Flash to Unit
00. Unit 00 flies off in the same direction, ripping apart all buildings in
hits way. It's finally stopped by a larger building. The building collapses
as Unit 00's head knocks against it. Pieces of debris fly from the building,
hitting a nearby mountain. Flash to a spot beside Oririel and Chie. They're
both standing. Large chunks of cement are flying at them. Chie swings her
arm. The AT field lashes out, and the cement blocks hit it and shatter. Flash
to Maya.

Maya: "Pattern Blue! Another angel's been detected! It's a quarter mile
behind Unit 00!"

Flash to Oririel's face.

Oririel:
"No! Why'd you do that?! Now they'll detect us!"

Flash to Chie, a little depressed.

Chie:
"Um . . . I'm sorry."

Flash to Misato.

Aoba: "It's a pretty strong energy signature, stronger than the other angel!
Hey wait! It's gone . . ."

Misato:
"Give me a lock on the area the signature was located!"

Hayuga:
"Locking on!"

Flash to Main screen. A screen flashes on in the air in front of the main
screen. It shows a mountain. Flash to Misato.

Misato:
"Close in!"

Flash to secondary display. In closes in to show Oririel and Chie. Flash to
Misato.

Misato: "(to herself) . . . That looks like . . . (normal) By the uniform,
they're from Shinji's school. Give me a match."

Flash to another display, playing through the profiles of all the children in
Shinji's school at an almost unintelligible speed. Then it went blank for a
moment. Display screen flashes: MATCH NOT FOUND

Flash to Oririel. Oririel looks out at the city.

Oririel:
"Doesn't matter now. C'mon. Let's get out of here before they come looking."

Flash to Oririel and Chie. They vanish into thin air.
Flash to Hayuga.

Hayuga:
"They've disappeared!"

Flash to Misato, her face locked in concern/anger.

Misato:
"That's . . . that's impossible!"

Hayuga:
"It's been confirmed. There's not a trace anything's been there."

Misato:
"Hold off on that! What's the status of Unit 00?"

Flash to the interior of Unit 00's entry plug, from Rei's point of view. It's
apparent from the picture in front of her that the EVA is getting up. The
angel comes into view, but it's not attacking her. It's just standing there,
as if looking at her. Flash to the countdown monitor for Unit 00. It reaches
zero and stops. Flash to Unit 00's entry plug. The lights turn red. Flash to
Angel. It begins to approach. Flash to Rei's face. Her expression is normal,
but she's broken out into sweat. Flash to angel, lashing out at Unit 00 with
its right arm. Flash to Misato.

Maya:
"It's been hit!"

Misato:
"Cut off the neural connectors! Now!"

Flash to Maya, who turns around in her chair.

Maya:
"But . . ."

Flash to a spot behind Misato and Ritsuko. Maya is turned around in her
chair. The main monitor is illuminated by a bright, blue flash, casting
shadows behind everything in the way of the light. Maya's eyes go wide. Flash
to Maya, the back of her head brighter than the front for a moment, then
fading back to natural lighting. She blinks twice, then turns around to the
console.

Maya: "I'm reading an unknown energy signature emitting from behind Unit 03 .
. . neural connectors are disengaged."

Flash to Ritsuko.

Ritsuko:
"What was that!?"

Flash to Misato.

Misato:
"Status of Unit 01 and 02?"

Maya:
"They are ready, Major."

Misato:
"Launch Evas! Maya, give me the source of the unknown energy reading."

Hayuga:
"Locking on. I've found the source and displaying it on the monitor now."

Misato:
"Magnify the image."

Flash to secondary display. Ranma is lying on a rooftop.

Flash to Angel, lying on the street, stunned. It begins to get up, but before
it can, the red hand of Unit 02 stabs a Prog Knife through its core. End
battle music.

Flash to Ritsuko, eyes wide in disbelief.

Ritsuko (loudly):
"How'd he get there!? Maya are you sure about the readings?"

Flash to Maya.

Maya:
"Yes, sempai."

Flash to the side view of Misato and Ritsuko, with Ritsuko in front and
Misato facing her.

Misato:
"What . . . what just happened, Ritsuko?"

Ritsuko turns to look at Misato. Flash to Ritsuko's point of view.

Ritsuko: "I don't know. I'm still trying to figure out how Ranma got out of
the entry plug and on top of the roof of that building."

Misato turns forward.

Misato: "Maya, continue scans at both Ranma's location and where the other AT
field appeared. I also want a video tape of our exterior cameras sent to me
as soon as possible."

Flash to Maya nodding her head, facing Misato. She turns back to the console.

Maya:
"Unit 01 and Unit 02 reporting in."

Flash to Misato.

Misato:
"Shinji, Asuka how was it?"

Flash to main monitor. Secondary monitors flash on with Shinji and Asuka in
them.

Asuka: "It was a piece of cake. I could've taken it out without Shinji here.
Can't believe Wonder Girl had so much trouble. . . . Oh, and by the way, have
you recovered Ranma yet?"

Shinji:
"How is Ranma, Misato?"

Misato:
"Recovery teams have been dispatched to rescue him."

Flash to Asuka, smiling slyly.

Asuka (smirking):
"Looks like Wonder Boy couldn't cut it."

Flash to Shinji. He's angry.

Shinji (snapping): "Leave Ranma alone, Asuka. You didn't do so well your
first time out either. I was there."

Flash to Asuka. She's stunned.

Asuka (defensive):
"Well I could have beaten it without your help, Third Child."

Shinji (angry)::
"If it wasn't for me, you would be fish bait, Second Child."

Flash to a spot above the control deck Misato is on in the NERV Command
Center. Everyone is staring at the main monitor. Flash to door behind Misato.
The door opens and Toji enters, slightly panting, hands on knees, recovering
breath. Flash to Toji's face. He stands up straight.

Toji:
"Way ta go Shinji, you tell her!"

Flash: Black screen.

Akane (yelling):
"Ranma no baka!! Why can't you at least try the food I prepared for you?"

Flash to the dining room at the Tendo house. Akane is standing in the middle
of the room, facing Ranma, who's out on the porch. Nabiki and Kasumi are
sitting at the table, Kasumi kneeling as she normally does, Nabiki sprawled
out. Flash to Nabiki.

Nabiki:
"Another lover's quarrel?"

Akane (yelling):
"Who said I'm in love with this insensitive baka!?"

Nabiki: "Come on Akane. It's been over a year now since the wedding fiasco.
Why can't you two admit you at least like each other?"

Akane: "Me? You want me to say that I like an insensitive, pig-headed pervert
like Ranma? No way! What makes you think I even like him? At least Auntie
Saotome taught Ranma some manners."

Flash to Ranma, looking at his feet.

Ranma: "(whispering) I see. (pause)(normal) I'm heading out, see ya later
Nabiki, Kasumi."

Flash to a point on the porch. Ranma walks away. Black screen. A telop:
[Where do you think you're going!? Get back here!! I'm still talking to
you!!] Black screen for ten seconds. Sounds of cicada. Flash to the
'unfamiliar ceiling' for twenty seconds. Flash to a point on the ceiling,
looking down on a hospital bed for twenty seconds. The patient is Ranma. Rei
is sitting on a stool next to the bed, the whites of her eyes slightly red
and puffy, as if she'd been crying for a long time. Flash to side view of
Ranma's head for ten seconds. He turns, focusing his eyes, for around five
seconds.

Ranma:
"How long have you been here, Rei?"

Flash to a point behind Ranma's head. Rei's face is without expression.

Rei:
"Why?"

Ranma:
"Hm?"

Rei:
"Why did you save me?"

Ranma:
"Why shouldn't I?"

Rei:
"I am expendable. I can be replaced."

Ranma:
"What? That's stupid! Do you want to die? If I hadn't helped, you would have."

Rei:
"No...yes. How did you do that?"

Ranma:
"You mean the ki blast?"

Rei:
"Was that what it was? . . . Yes."

Ranma: "I'm not sure if I could explain it to you . . . I don't know exactly
how it works either."

Rei:
"Could you explain it to me?"

Ranma:
" . . . Yes . . . You know that everything has a soul right?"

Rei's brow twitches slightly.

Rei:
"I suppose."

Ranma: "The soul is made from ki. That ki blast was what would happen if you
drew a little bit of your soul from out of your body and released it."

Rei (softly):
" . . . like an AT field . . ."

Ranma:
"'scuse me?"

Rei:
"Nothing."

A moment of silence.

Ranma:
" . . . Rei?"

Rei:
"Yes?"

Ranma:
"I trust you. Can you not tell anyone about that?"

Another pause.

Rei:
"Yes."

Ranma:
"Thank you."

Flash to the lower part of Rei's face. Her mouth curls slightly upwards,
almost a smile. Flash to a point in the middle of the 'sephiroth' pattern on
the floor of Gendo's office, facing his desk. The silhouettes: Gendo is
sitting at his desk in his normal position. Fuyuzuki stands on his left.

Gendo:
"What do you think?"

Fuyuzuki: "I still can't believe the blast came from Saotome. Are you sure he
wasn't carrying a concealed weapon?"

Gendo:
"Yes."

Fuyuzuki:
"Is he an Angel? No normal human being could do what Saotome did."

Gendo:
"No. His sync rates prove that. What has Dr. Akagi discovered?"

Fuyuzuki:
"Nothing so far."

Gendo:
"Keep me posted."

Fuyuzuki:
"Yes sir."

Gendo:
"Where's Rei?"

Fuyuzuki:
"She's visiting Saotome right now."

Flash to the left side of Gendo's desk. He touches a button on the little
monitor he has in front of him. It shows Rei next to Ranma's bed, talking to
him.

Gendo:
"Seems like Saotome has some interesting abilities, don't you agree Fuyuzuki?"

Fuyuzuki:
"I can't argue with that."

Gendo:
"I want Saotome monitored and the tests done."

Fuyuzuki:
"Yes, sir."

Fuyuzuki turns to leave.

Gendo:
"Wait, Fuyuzuki. The second angel detected yesterday. Is the tape ready?"

Fuyuzuki turns back.

Fuyuzuki:
"I believe the Major is examining it right now."

Gendo:
"Send me a copy."

Fuyuzuki turns again and proceeds out. Flash to Gendo's point of view.
Fuyuzuki makes his way across the room, opens the door, and exits. Flash to a
point in front of one of Gendo's desk drawers. His right hand opens the
drawer, and with his left, he takes out a framed photograph. The camera can't
see the picture because of the glare in the reflection of the window off the
glass. Flash to Gendo's face. With his right hand, he removes his glasses and
smiles, the wrinkles on his face more clear than they normally are. Black
screen.

Rei:
"Have you ever loved anyone, Ikari-kun?"

Flash to photograph. The glare is less now, and the photo is more visible,
though not completely. It's a picture of Yui holding chibi-Shinji. Three
drops of water hit the surface next to Shinji's face.

Gendo:
"Once . . . (pause) Once, (pause) long ago. (pause x2) Thank you, Saotome."

Black screen, white characters:
