Simple, don't use tabs. If you want to indent, just use 5 spaces.  

That's one of the reasons I still use the MS-DOS editor to write my
stories.  I know the file will display on any platform and tabs are
implemented with spaces.  (A tab will jump you over five spaces, but
deleting it takes five keystrokes.)
