<< Ken, they have a certain amount of dificulty with banning people who use
web-mail type accounts. There's nothing stopping a person from simply
applying for a new web-mail account under a different name, and
re-subscribing to the list. Many of the webmail services require NO proof
of identity, and have had this problem crop up with others. Folks can
simply assume any email identity they like.

As it currently stands (and I could very likely be mistaken, please
correct me if I'm wrong about this, WW), the only sure way to cut this
person off from the list is to take the IP number of the site he's
originating from (which, fortunately, Hotmail DOES stamp onto the mail; in
the case of Gubby it's Originating-IP: [24.112.85.212]) and ban the entire
 site.

Unfortunately, this would mean cutting off EVERYONE who originates from
this site, not just Gubby. No one using this ISP would be able to
resubscribe to the list, period. Thereby screwing over any of a number of
people for the annoying behavior of a single person.

I feel uncomfortable with that. It takes what Gubby's been doing and
elevates it to the catagory of net-terrorism. Forcing WW to police the list
that tightly renders the list an unpleasant place to be. I hate to agree
with the idea, but for now, the best way to deal with Gub-man is to
activate the filters on our individual emailers and kill-file him. If we
don't want to read his rather in-your-face letters, we don't have to.

On the other hand, if Gubby resents being ignored and retaliates in some
manner, THEN it's time to consider harsh measures.

Remember, Gubby.. there's nothing stopping someone ELSE from getting a
Hotmail account and using it to email you some like.. ohh.. say.. the
entire contents of a source code CD-ROM? 650 megs of text dumped into a
Hotmail account is NOT a pleasant thought.

Or someone could use an annonymous remailer to send you a few hundred
copies of the 1903 Sears catalog.

Think about it, Gubby. I know you've said you see no reason and no purpose
in what's known as 'tact', but it DOES exist for a reason. What's that
 reason?

Being tactful and polite keeps the majority of the general public from
trying to rip you to pieces for being rude. After all, if there's no use
for tact, why'd the human race go to all of the considderable trouble of
inventing it in the first place?

Well, just another $0.02 of philosophy from the old soldier and hack
writer. Take it with a grain or two of salt.
