Normally, I have little patience for "Next Generation" fics. They are
usually uninspired, and the few that are interesting are so enormous that
whenever I try and read them, I can't get through the "set-up" part
without spending a full day.

This seems to be the exception.

Well written, "canonical" (R+A, U+K), with at least one interesting second
gen character (and hopefully more to come). If the standards set in this
beginning are continued, this could be excellent.

You might, however, wish to make the dialogue a little less outright
explanation. People don't tend to tell their life-stories and problems at
the drop of a hat.
