I would like to clarify my earlier post. If option #2 is chosen, Ranma
will still be cursed because he needs to be able to change sexes in
order to marry a Tendou daughter (since they also will change sexes).

Sounds Good to me. ^_^

The next key question is:

Did Genma know of the Tendo family "quirk" and deliberately
curse Ranma?

Which leads to:

If Ranma was set-up, what happens to Genma when Ranma
works it out?

And as a side question:

If Genma knows of the "quirk", just how close *ARE* he and Soun?

Regardless of whether a FKC or R1/2 background dominates, this
approach does offer scope for comedy and character manipulation
that a straight fusion doesn't.  It should also make it possible to
avoid some of the more painful characterisation clashes that were
appearing in the original draft.
