Actually, the narrator doesn't have to be the main character. For example,
in _To_Kill_a_Mockingbird_, Scout Finch narrates but her father Atticus is
the main character. I got the impression that UkyouKwnji was aiming for the
same effect here, with Konatsu narrating what happens to the main character
Ukyou.
The same thing happens in _A Prayer for Owen Meany_... John
Wheelwright is the narrator, but is second in importance in the book
to Owen Meany, the main character.
I haven't read the latter book, but I have read the former, and I assure
I have. It's actually a better example of this than _Mockingbird_
(_The_Great_Gatsby_ might be too), but for some reason _Mockingbird_ was the
only one that came to mind when I wrote that comment. Oh well.
you, it is definitely about Scout Finch. It is about how she saw the world
differently over the course of one year. It is about her viewpoints, her
growing up, her life.
If you think the book is about Atticus Finch, look at the climactic moment
of the story, where 'Boo' Radley rescues 'his' children, and tell me where
Atticus is at that moment in the action.
Good point. I haven't read _Mockingbird_ since eighth grade, and I thought
the turning point of the main plot was in court while Mr. Radley's big scene
was the turning point of a subplot. But it's been seven years or so since I
was in eighth grade, so I could be wrong.
To go back to the Soliloquies which started this discussion, it is never
really established which of the two characters is more important.
