        Someone said here recently that most of the original authors were so
inconsistent with their story lines and character portrayals that, like the
Bible or U.S. Tax Code, you can find evidence to 'prove' just about anything
you wish.  The bottom line here is that if the reader thinks a plot device
or character portrayal is 'canon', then it's canon as far as that reader is
concerned.

        Exactly, I haven't been much paying attention to the "IC or OOC" debate <I use
the term debate loosely> as of late, but it has been here for about a week... which is
about 6 days too long for me.  It might be best if people simply accepted the fact that
this is a FAN<Emphasis> FICTION <Emphasis> Mailing List.  The Fans are the writers, and
they write fictitious stories... fiction is largely based on the writer's own
perceptions.

        We're here to read fanfics and, if we're lucky, get some kind of response
in return to those we write.  Gary has been nice enough to devote a large
amount of his time to giving authors of all skill levels valuable feedback
on their stories.  Often, his comments are quite thought provoking.
Occasionally they are even insightful.  Whatever the case, he takes the time
and offers his OPINIONS for the author's consideration.  Nothing is said
that he's always right (or wrong, for that matter).  If more people were
willing to do as much reading and C&C'ing as Gary, this list would be like
it was two years ago when it was much smaller and a lot more friendly.

        Quite so, everyone is entitled to their opinions, no matter how warped, sick,
twisted, or logical they are.  As I am a new person to the list <By new I mean only
been a month here, if that.> I must say that there hasn't been an overabundance of C&C,
which was one of the main reasons I joined the List.
        My own opinion, Naturally, so take it with a grain of salt.

        I'm sure you've all noticed how much public C&C has dropped off in recent
years.  Much of that, I'm sure, is due to the increasingly acrimonious tone
of both the reviewer's public comments and the author's equally public
response.  Full blown mud-slinging of the type we've just witnessed is
what's driving C&C away.  Who wants to write C&C and get publicly 'dressed
down' for 'not knowing what they are talking about'?  Let the author and
reader
decide if the C&C is accurate or full of crap.

        As I said, I haven't been here long, but there also hasn't been much C&C, which
is something I crave with an avid thirst.

        We all have our views of how each series is portrayed.  The beauty of
fanfictions is that we get to witness those differences in the stories
posted here.  We might not agree with the views held by each author or
reviewer but they are entitled to those views.  If you disagree with a
reviewer's conclusions, write your own review espousing your position.  Let
the reading public decide.  Point - counterpoint.  If nothing else, the
author will get at least two reviews of his/her story.

        Sounds good to me.  Now the problem starts of how to get people to actually DO
the aforementioned actions.  Would be nice.  *Sigh*

        One last thing.  This type of public snarling at each other is undignified
and unworthy of either of you.  Drop it, take it private, or agree to some
kind of duel to settle your differences.  This 'Is too - Is not' nonsense is
a waste of bandwidth and flooding a lot of mailboxes with needless acrimony
over a topic that you will never get a consensus on.
