Question:  I've read countless fanfics where Ranma's walking on the 

fence

is attributed to balance training.  Is there somewhere in either manga 

or

anime which directly says this, or is this just fanfic convention?

There is no direct mention of this in the manga as far as I can 
remember. Ranma can walk on the fence because he CAN, just as Kodachi 
can make medically impossible potions and Ryouga can lift several tons 
without ripping his arms out of their sockets. They just can.

The author of Ranma fanfiction doesn't need to say HOW Ranma can do the 
things he does (unless it's linked with the plot in some way).
