Ah, yet another Spamburger from me, Murmur the Fallen.
And what is this one about?
It is about perfection.
Specifically, it is about the ...well, I wouldn't term it a 'trend', really.
At any rate, onto the rant.
****Warning. I am making quite a bit of generalized statements. Of course,
there are exceptions to the things that I say******
I have noticed a sort of sub-genre in fanfiction, specifically in Ranma. It
is, what I have dubbed, as the Perfect Ranma fics.
What is the Perfect Ranma?
In alternaverse and continuation fics, it is when Ranma is or becomes perfect.
That is, he is well-mannered, intelligent, observant, and kind. The fact that
he is a kick-ass martial artist is pretty much a constant.
In alternaverses, the writer invariably sites the change that he has made as
the result of this Perfect Ranma.
In Continuations, it is the fact that Ranma has learned from his mistakes and
thus became a better person.
Now, don't get me wrong, there are quite a few Perfect Ranma fics that I enjoy
quite a bit. The one that stands out most in my mind are the Alternate
Universe fics by Micheal Chen aka Zenki/Key.
It is just that if it is not done extremely well (such as Oneshot's 'Just
won't die', although I'm not sure if I should group that series into this
category), it comes off as hokey and boring.
After all, how interesting is it to read a fic starring an insufferably
perfect protagonist?
In other words, it is reading a self-insertion without the author anywhere in
sight.
Thank you for listening. Reading. Whichever.
