First, he finally understands that his problems came from his inability to
confront his problems.  He was running away.  He then promised himself he
won't run away anymore.  Then, when the problems (aka his fiancees, the
fights, etc.) confronts him, he... runs away?!  That _is_ what he did,
isn't it?

It would seem so. Maybe I didn't illustrate it that well to begin with.
Anyway, he does promise himself that he won't run from his problems, yes.
After attempting to work them out and seeing that doing that only results in
the same thing, he realizes the only thing he can do is run. His fiancees and
basically everyone around him treat him as nothing but an object, and don't
truly value his opinion unless it benefits them anyway. Hope I managed to
clear that up.
