I will never understand the mentality behind self-insertion fics.
Very well. I'll tell you. SI fics are simply a form of literary 
wish-fulfilment. If a person really likes a certain fictional world, he 
will find himself wishing he could visit that world(I know I have). But 
because we can't physically enter these worlds, some of us will elect to 
do the next best thing and write a story set in that world where we play 
a part. As long as the author's avatar isn't what we gamers refer to as 
a "Munchkin", I see no real problem with this. 

Now, I -do- understand that people like to talk about themselves--this 
is also a childish impulse that people grow out of
Oh they do, do they? I think you'll find people of all ages and all 
walks of life enjoy talking about themselves, the things they've done, 
the places they've been, etc. I find no problem with this either, 
provided the person talks about more than just himself.
