I'm going to join in because this looks like a valid discussion, I have
read a novel that was set in World war II, which ended abruptly due to an
alien invasion (you could substitute Angels for aliens). neway, the Allied
and Axis were forced to work together to come up with a new weapon<<
Harry Turtledove's Worldwar series. I read that one too. Technically, they
didn't develop new weapons but enchanced what was under development (nukes,
radar, jets, gas).

Not sure this was even a consideration in Evangelion... after all, how
many battles actually lasted sufficiently long to deplete the Eva's
power?<<
Pratically every battle. They were timed to end in 3 minutes after the EVA
lost its power cord. Purely for the sake of dramatics.
the planes have to attack from machine-gun range, so you can see
the fraggers coming and sidestep out of the way.
Ever heard of the dive bomber? They drop anti-tank bombs and would be
perfect to take out walker as well without getting into machinegun range
with the walkers.
I like the idea of smaller ones, AT-ST size, though.
Even those are next to useless without energy weapons.
