In fact, that is one of the best reasons to HAVE battlefield mecha in
WW2... the planes have to attack from machine-gun range, so you can
see
the fraggers coming and sidestep out of the way. Makes it darned
difficult to walk fire over an enemy force when it's not limited to
forward or backward movement, eh? This doesn't even mention the fact
that the mecha could easily elevate their main weaponry for use on
aircraft as easily as on ground targets, meaning that even a mech
armed
with a few machineguns becomes rather deadly for that strafing P-51
pilot.

You really believe that it would be that easy for them to target a
plane moving at 300-400 mph?

'Course not, but it's a heck of a lot more nasty than pintle-mount
machineguns on tanks, and even those aren't too nice when you're on a
strafing run... remember, it's REAL easy to shoot something coming
directly at you.

Also, late WW2 fighters could carry rockets quite
capable of hurting or destroying a tank and some attack planes >carried
cannon appreciably larger than the 50 cal machineguns and 20 >mm cannon
that were standard fighter armament.

Yeah, a brace of rockets would be a bad day indeed for this theoretical
puppy. Owie.

One version of the B-25 Mitchell carried a
75 mm cannnon as an anti-ship weapon. Also, given their height, these
mecha would be nice targets for artillery, especially anti-tank guns.

The B-25 served in the Japanese theatre, and NOT as a strafing vehicle;
it's a freakin' strategic bomber. Anti-tank guns, again, would really
really HURT these things, assuming that they're not packing more armor
than a tank.

All this design discussion is interesting, but I still don't see how
these designs are distinctly EVA and not general giant mecha.

<shrug> It's moved away from that, unfortunately... HEY! Here's a
thought about how this could happen, Eva-wise... Hitler was rumored to
have sent out a search party to find the Spear of Destiny, with which no
army could lose, right? (For those Eva fans out there who didn't catch
that, the proper name for the Spear of Destiny is Lancea Longini...) Say
his guys find it in Antarctica, along with Adam-thing of the author's
choice. So, now, all they have to do is get the thing to the front,
right? But... it's the length of a football field; you can't exactly
expect for your commander to heft it. Fortunately, with it comes the key
to working on a giant of your own...

I will NOT write this fic, so if anybody wants it, they can keep it.
