the finances, but I don't recall seeing any indication that she uses 
HER money to support the household.

Do you see any other form of income for that family?  The dojo has no 
students, and other than Genma's occasional romp as Mr. Panda at Tofu's 
office, no one has a job.  Without "the Mercenary" there'd be no 
clothes, no food, and more body-shaped holes than home.
