Just a little idea you could probably do well to ignore.
What I'm suggesting is that you could do a crossover with Key the Metal
Idol. Though it hasn't been completely released in the US yet, it's a
poular enough series to do a fanfic on. (Hey! You could be the first!)
Here's the idea:
The plotline for Key is basically this: Some time in the 1920's, a young
Japanese scientist is trying to design a humanoid robot. His design
works well enough, it it requires more energy than, say, to keep the
city of New York lighted up completely for a week, than to run the robot
for a few minutes. He's looking for an alternate energy source.
On a trip to Hokkaido, he meets a Shinto priestess with the ability to
control dolls with her mind at ceremonies. He sees this as a possibility
to control the robots he's made. He marries her and returns to Tokyo,
then starts the experiments to find out how she does it.
Bit by bit, she loses her powers. Then WW2 happens, and the government
stops funding his project. He loses his lab, and he returns to Hokkaido.
And his wife's powers return.
He realizes just what it is that these 'powers' actually are. The Shinto
priestesses in his wife's family all have the ability to make human
thought manifest in physical actions. It's not telekinesis. The powers
will only manifest before an audience. That is to say, the priestess can
only use her powers on stage. She sucks in the thoughts of the audience
and channels them into whatever she's controlling. She can't do it
alone.
He starts the experiments again, hoping to 'extract' the power from her
body. When they have a child, he brings the child into the experiment as
well.
Seventeen years of failed experiments hurt his family greatly. His
daughter hates him because with each passing experiment, her mother gets
weaker. On her seventeenth birthday, 1970, her mother dies, giving all
the power to her. And she starts spitting out this pink gelatin. It's
the 'power source' he's been looking for for so long. Every night after
that, she'd spit out an entire bottl's worth of this 'energy,' PP.
A little note though. The person driving the scientist on wasn't
himself. He did these experiments because another man, a man in the
military, wanted the power of the robots for things other than
'household' purposes. The man threatened to take away the wife and the
daughter if the scientist didn't continue the experiments.

Okay, I won't spoil KEY anymore. Here's the idea I thought up. Since it
doesn't matter at exactly what time the scientist was born, you could
start this story in the late 1800's. That way, by the 1930's, the
scientist would not only have the robot done, he'd also have found the
energy source.
The robots in KEY are basically human sized pieces of metal, called
PPORs. Their internal systems are basically made to imitate human
organs. What if somebody modified the robot to the size of the EVAs.
Here's what I propose. Gendo marries the scientist's daughter in KEY.
For the sake of EVA, let's just call her Yui. By him, she has a pair of
twins, a girl and a boy. Guess their names. The mother dies soon after
their birth in a test run of a proto-type PPOR. As only females in his
wife's family have the 'ability,' Gendo starts some experiments with the
little girl. The boy's sent away to a relative. Because the girl's
ability doesn't seem to have been awakened yet, he pumps PP into the
girl. She gains use of her abilities, but with some serious
side-affects. She loses all emotion, gains a semi-photographic memory,
and begins to lose all her bodily pigments, becoming an albino. She's
raised to think that she's a robot, born to pilot the giant PPORs.
All of this is being done in preparation for the China-takeover,
proposed by an old man named Ajo, a general in the Army. WW2 happens as
it does, with the PPORs left in Japan as the final weapon. Germany joins
forces with Japan, and learn of the project. They bring the three
existing PPORs from Japan to Germany and set up a 'death camp' used for
draining PP from captives. Gendo is the head of the facility, with the
PPORs to protect it. Germans not only plan to use the PPORs as weapons,
they plan to use PP as fuel. Tanks are being scrapped for PPOR parts,
and hundred are being prepared for war.
Somewhere, there's an information leak. and the Allies get PART of the
PPOR technology. They create their own 'improved' PPORs, which basically
apply their technological power to the research provided . There is,
however, a serious flaw in their design: they need two times as much PP
to power their PPORs. If they don't give enough, their mechs go beserk.
The first sixteen in their production already have, gaining abilities
nobody thought PPORs could have. Powers like sucking energy from dead
humans. They all have a common goal: to get to Gendo's draining facility
and get the PP. To prevent these 'Dark Angels,' three pilots are
summoned: Gendo's two children and a German girl. The pilots are
children because children control the PP better than adults can. They're
sent into battle.

There's only one problem I see with this little idea. The PPORs were
originally meant to be wireless robots. This doesn't exactly blend with
the EVA elements. Tell me what you think!
