I'm not sure if this has come up before but has anyone mentioned 
Kishin Hedan?
 I mean here you have an example of bulky retro "suits" of course they
need an alien "heart" to power them instead of the "Impact Child".
 the same styling could be used with Eva's or could also perhaps be a more
"productiion model" designed by some forces to stop them.
 Somehow I see Nerv as more of an Allied group but Seele having ties with
Hitler's mysticism.
 Also, on the question of nationality and nationalism....the Kishin
characters were mainly Japanese and German but neutral in outlook.

 I'dd love to be able to read the novels....
