That causes problems for the ending of the story, though. I'm not sure
that it would be believable to have Hinako like the oversalted cookies,
and even if it would, it would come off as a deus ex machina.

Any ideas on how to fix this? (Anybody?)

Okay, I'll bite on this one.  How about change it to where they are 
allowed to make one dish and one dish only.  It can be anything.  
Kodachi elects to make something an entree which would be very French 
and elaborate.  Akane picks a simple candy.  Something like 
Chocolate-covered peanut butter balls.  This is a very simple recipe.  
Tripling the (Confectioner's) sugar would change the consistency of the 
center of the candy.  It would still allow it to be molded.  Once dipped 
into the chocolate, it would hold its shape.  

Hinako being the judge would naturally pick the sweet over the gourmet 
dish.
