Episode 2: The Shrine of Lost Tears
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The morning came to late as Shampoo awoke from her camp just
outside the town of Longzitou (Dragon's Head). She quickly
dressed and stepped outside into the chilly morning air as the
sun just began to peak over the distant horizon. After watching
the sunrise, she packed her things and dashed off to her next
location on the map called: "Griffon's Landing". She did not
know exactly where it was, but hoped the map would lead her in
a matter in which she could easily find it.
Almost a full day behind Shampoo, Mousse, too, awoke early to attempt
to gain some ground on her before she reached her final
destination. He packed his things and moved through the rolling
hills toward the town of Longzitou.
Trudging through the tall grasses of the southeastern plains, Shampoo
looked ahead as the sun began to set behind the mountian
shilouettes upon the western horizon. Determined to get to
Griffon's Landing before dark, she continued onward pushing her
tiring limbs through another stretch of plain.
Mousse was having similar problems. Tiring legs made him think
to take the next several stretch by air. His duck form was small
and his gear was not the easiest to carry for long periods of
time, but the thought of catching up with Shampoo willed him
forward. As nighttime fell, he landed outside of the small
township, Longzitou.
Mousse: (thinking) Finally here. Shampoo I'll catch up with you soon.
I promise.
Trudging on a staff provided to her by her sisters, Shampoo
reached the top of a hill overlooking all of what she had just
traversed. She had pushed herself much further than a regular
hiker would dare, and it was beginning to take its toll. She
looked around the hilltop and came upon a strangely shaped
rock formation.
The rocks piled high upon themselves looking almost like a
roost, of some sort. Along the bottom of the rock, jutted several
talon-shaped formations formed by the strange wind and rain
currents formed by the towering rocks.
Shampoo: (thinking) This is Griffon Peak?
Shampoo looked at the map and again at the formation and
determined that yes, she was indeed at her first landmark. Glad
to finally be able to rest, Shampoo set up her encampment and
reviewed her path to the next landmark, somewhere in a
mountain chasm.
As the sun rose in the eastern sky, Mousse emerged from his
tent and stretched in the light breeze. He packed his things,
and walked into the small town of Longzitou to see how far
behind Shampoo he really was.
Shampoo looked up at the morning sky and quickly gathered her
equipment. She looked to the distant, yet looming mountians
where her second destination awaited her. With her staff in
hand, and a refreshed body and mind, she began her next day
of travel.
Longzitou was busy in the early morning for a small city.
Merchants were bustling around, setting up their booths for
their wares, people were walking and chatting in the pleasant
setting of the town.
Mousse: (walking to a merchant) Excuse me, I am looking for my beautiful
Shampoo. Have you seen her?
Merchant: Do I look like a psychic? What does she look like?
Mousse: (taking out a photo) Well, I have a picture of her right here.
Merchant: Does she carry a lot of weapons?
Mousse: Not normally, but I suppose she could be carrying some.
Merchant: Yeah I've seen her...
Mousse: You have?! (placing his hands on the merchant's shoulders and
staring him in the eyes) Where? You must tell me!!!!
Merchant: Calm down! She passed through here about a day or so ago. If...
Mousse leaves the town running along the path shown on the map.
Merchant: ... you hurry you might catch her. (sigh) Kids...
Shampoo had left the grassy terrain of the plains for a while
now as she hooked through a chasm through a small, isolated
range of mountians. The chasm walls towered several hundreds of
feet above her as she continued to her destination.
Shampoo: (thinking) Soon Shampoo get Heart of Golden Tear, and then have
Ranma all to her own self!
The thought energized Shampoo as she though of all the... happy
possibilities of things to come when she returned to Tokyo. As
she turned a corner in the chasm, a large stone buiding almost
appearing as though it was carved in the pass towered in
front of her. The building looked like it could easily be a
shrine or temple of some sort.
Shampoo: (thinking) Aiya! If Shampoo going to keep going, Shampoo must
go in shrine.
Shampoo walked to the doors of the temple where she found
some words engraved on the side of the doorway.
Shampoo: (reading) Shrine of Lost Tears. This is what map say is second
landmark!
Eagerly, Shampoo opened the door and stepped into the darkness
beyond them.
Mousse had never remembered running so hard for so long before
in his life. He was breathing hard, but was making up ground
faster than he would have thought. He took a breather by a small
pool of water where he cooled off before continuing. Diving
into the pool, he changed into his duck form and waded for a
short time, then he grabbed his pack and flew onwards.
A short time later, he took another small rest at a large rock
with strange talon-like rocks carved from erosion. He recognized
the landform as Griffon's Landing from the legend. He had made
it to his first landmark, and hoped to gain more by the time
night fell. He looked at the afternoon sun, then to the
mountains that now seemed much closer than ever before.
Shampoo walked through the shrine, her footsteps echoing in the
eerie silence. The halls were lit only by braziers and the
fire danced around with the long shadows. The hall in front of
her soon opened into a small room with stairs going up to a
landing with a door with a sign reading "Exit" on it. Eagerly,
Shampoo began walking up the stairs, but as she stepped on the
landing, she triggered a pressure plate causing her to fall
into a large pit opening up underneath her.
Shampoo: AIYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Shampoo hit the bottom of the pit with an audible thud. She got
up on shaking knees rubbing her aching legs and backside.
Shampoo: (thinking) Shampoo need be more careful next time.
As she recovered from her fall, she looked around the room
she fell into. It was roughly the same size as the last, with
a corridor leading to her immediate left, the door she had seen
before, led in front of her. Gathering herself up, she walked
into down the corridor available to her.
As Shampoo continued forward, the corridor transitioned from
rough, and square to much more smooth and rounded. She carefully
observed her new setting and the craftsmanship of the tunnel
she had just entered.
The tunnel itself was roughly 10 feet in diameter with no bricks
in the walls themselves, but some bricks in the flattened floor.
Each appeared to be hand carved with figures of some sort of
ancient tale or something. Shampoo walked carefully down the
the tunnel, and eventually came to a section where slits were
carved all around the tunnel.
Shampoo: What these strange grooves for?
Shampoo looked at them closely, but found nothing odd about them.
Continuing down, she carefully walked over each groove and
watched for anything unusual. A sound of scraping stone startled
her and she swung around. As she did, her staff came down on a
loose brick causing it to give way.
Rumbling and mechanical sounds filled the passage breaking the
silence. Large disc-like stones rolled through the grooves across
Shampoo's way.
Shampoo: Aiya! So that what grooves are for. How Shampoo get through
tunnel now?
Shampoo studied the stone discs and eventually picked up on a
pattern. After taking a few breaths, she darted through and
got passed the first several series of stones only to get
interrupted by another group on a different pattern. More
observation allowed Shampoo to get through the remaining discs
and continue on her search for a way out of the shrine.
Beyond the disc trap, Shampoo walked into a large room where
a stalactite hung high above a small pool of water. From the
stalactite, drops of water dripped down into the cloudy pool.
Shampoo approached the pool with curiosity. As she looked in the
pool, the waters became clearer.
The waters showed a scene where Shampoo had come back to Tokyo
and was making her way toward the Tendo Dojo. As she arrived,
Ranma wasn't there, but she was invited to stay until his
return. After a few moments, the door opened, and Shampoo
launched herself on Ranma, who hugged her back, making Akane
rather jealous.
Shampoo: Stupid girl! Only Shampoo have Ranma now!
Shampoo was filled with so much joy, she began to cry. Tears
fell into the pool. The scene grew cloudier as Shampoo was now
visualizing her wedding day. Shampoo was standing tall and
proud at the alter on her tribal lands with all her sisters
and friends from Tokyo in the crowd watching her. She stood
beside her tall, handsome groom, and as the ceremony progressed,
the waters dimmed and became cloudy once more, as more tears
fell.
Shampoo then had a thought. Was Mousse following her? She had
suspected him to, but wasn't so sure. The pools cleared as now
she saw Mousse as a duck flying over Griffon's Landing. She
wiped her tears away no faced with annoyance and rage, as she
did, though, one fell into the pool causing it to cloud and
then grow dim.
With new excitement and eagerness to press on, Shampoo got up
and darted out the wider corridor behind the pool. Upon exiting
the corridor, she entered another large room with large statues
forming several rows in the room with a stairway leadin up in its
center. In all her joy, Shampoo ran to the staircase. As she
neared the first set of statues, bolts of electricity arced
from the two statues giving Shampoo a nasty jolt.
Shampoo: Aiya! Is another trap! Why these stupid people have so many
stupid traps?
Wiser from her past experience, Shampoo walked to another
pair of statues and placed her staff between them. Electricity
zapped the staff, and she withdrew it. She continued down the
row until one pair didn't zap the staff. Cautiously, she walked
through unscathed. She walked down repating the process, but as
she continued, another pair zapped her as she walked down the
row.
Shampoo: Aiya! Stupid Statues!
Shampoo took out a polearm Ling-Ling had insisted that she
bring along and held it in front of her as she walked through
the maze of invisible walls. After hours of wandering through
it, Shampoo reached the stairway. She walked up the stairway
and exited the shrine from a door just beyond the mountainous
chasm, and hurried onward.
As Shampoo wandered for nearly a day through the shrine, Mousse
had rested only a few hours away from the shrine. He gathered
his things and rushed the hike to the chasm. Soon he, too,
approached the looming shrine carved within the mountain.
Mousse: I.. I made it! According to this map, all I need to do is
get beyond that shrine to get to the path towards the next
landmark! What is the best way to proceed?
After a couple of minutes pondering the situation, Mousse
pulled out his canteen and doused himself with water.
Mousse: (thinking) I need to make up as much time as I can, so I'll
fly over it!
After gathering his bag and belongings, Mousse circled around
gathering altitude to fly directly over the shrine and to
the opposite side where he landed to give his wings a rest.
While he was resting, a man clad in warrior garb walked down
the path towards the shrine while hunting. Seeing a duck near the
shrine, he prepared himself for a relatively easy catch.
As Mousse was just getting ready to continue, the warrior came
from the bushes and approached. Mousse looked at the warrior
out of curiosity at first, that is until the warrior threw a
spear landing several inches from him.
Mousse was now mad, and didn't care about being a duck to enter
combat.
Warrior: Drat, I missed! Oh, well I can take him with blowdarts and my
knives.
A barrage of daggers embedded themselves in the trees near the
warrior.
Warrior: Huh?! Where did...
The warrior looked as Mousse charged flying at the warrior. As
he drew near, he launched several chains at him.
Warrior: Where did those chains come from?!
The warrior fought vigilantly against the barrages of chains,
and daggers, but soon could not take anymore. In a last fit,
Mousse threw several barrages of his daggers at the Warrior
completely pinning him to a nearby tree. Confidently, Mousse
gathered his things and continued on his journey to find Shampoo.
