The amazons are hardly a typical matriarchal society. In RL, men were
warriors even in matriarchal societies because greater strength and
size
are usually advantages in pre-gunpowder combat (including missile
weapons).
Because of the prowess of the female amazons, the males of Joketsuzoku
aren't as valuable as warriors.
There's one other reason that men were the warriors in most societies
in history: We're more expendable, in terms of survival of the tribe.
How does a tribe of a few hundred (or less) members recover from a war
with their neighbors? By making a very large next generation. For
that, the limiting factor is the number of breeding-age females.
Heck, even if all the young adult males were wiped out, a few old men
(past their combat prime) and a handful of adolescent boys could
repopulate the tribe in short order. Decimate the same segment of the
female population, and the tribe will be gone in forty years.
This males-are-expendable-spear-fodder theory would probably be
stronger in a matriarchal society.
