I beg to differ with the 'magic word' theory.  I like to think that most 
people, like me, read any message that isn't a request for obscure 
information that the creator of the series wouldn't know the answer too.    
I personally tend to read everything that comes on the list, 
occasionally I'll get sick of a particular thread and delete it
unread, but that's the exception.

P.S.  As I am NOT aware of who "John Q. Fruitcake" is, I will instead be 
posting the results of that odd fic vote he held a little while ago...  
maybe.
