Two questions: 1) Is the mistress an accepted
Japanese custom regarded as tradition?

**No; this is very much a sad, sorry myth; it
is, however, a double-standard.  What the actual
thing was (and this comes from a friend of mine
in Kawasaki who suffered under said "tradition")
that  when a man gets bored in a marriage, he is
"expected" to have an affair (preferably with an
OL) or people will begin to believe he is
P-whipped.  If a woman gets bored, oh well.
Fortunately, this "tradition" is disappearing as
more and more Japanese women discover that funny
little western "tradition" known as divorce.


2) If so, why doesn't Kuno consider the idea? 
Then his only decision would be the choice of
which to marry.

**Again, it is not a tradition.  Kuno would
probably take the honorable route and remain
faithful to the one he marries, or he simply
hasn't thought of it (this last one is probably
more accurate).
