Opening Shot: Space, a portion of the Earth takes up the bottom half
of the screen. It's no longer the bluish-green color it used to be;
now it's covered in an almost monotonous grey. A small weather
satellite appears on the horizon as a speck but quickly moves towards
the camera. It's got several blinking lights and a large solar panel
extended. Just as it nears the camera enough to see the small
'LEXCORP' insignia on it's side a much larger object flies over the
camera and the helpless satellite is obliterated in the collision.
The larger object continues unhindered. It's a large metallic space
station that has an octopus look to it with eight identical claw like
apparatuses descending from the base of the station, pointed towards
earth. When the object finishes passing the camera, which takes a
good minute to do, the camera pans upwards to show the much larger
insignia of GENOM.
[Cut to a large control room. It's very dark, the only light is
coming from the arrays of monitors on all the walls. Various people
in lab coats are sitting at the consoles before these monitors, their
coats showing the obvious presence of gravity. Pan across most of
these console before coming to the back of a large and luxurious
looking chair on a dais in the center of the room. When the camera is
centered on the chair, it slowly begins to spin showing the elderly
(and strangely dressed) man [QUINCY] in the chair.]
[Fade to black.]
Merlyn Magic Productions Presents
Adam Leigh's:
A WORLD WITHOUT A FUTURE
[Opening Title Sequence: Images of the main characters as they were
before the cataclysm; Minako, Sasami, Makoto, Ayeka, Rei, Ryouko, Ami,
Tenchi, Natsumi, Miyuki, and Usagi. Overlay the picture of Usagi over
that of the Earth as a large asteroid comes hurtling through space and
collides with the planet. Fade to white, then to the blizzards going
on outside NewMetropolis. Cut to a close up of a very old Lex Luthor,
then pan backwards as he spreads his arms encompassing the entire city
in his grasp. The image cracks and shatters showing various angered
scenes: Tenchi yelling to a ghostly Ayeka, Luthor pushing a pile of
papers on the ground at a man in a suit, etc. End with a pan back
from the almost totally grey planet as it slowly shrinks away from the
quickly moving camera.]
[Fade to the Jurai Dojo. KATSUHITO is on the front mats doing a
series of preparatory kata in silence. TENCHI walks into the main
area wearing a pair of black slacks. Without his shirt you can tell
he has become much more muscular than he was prior to the asteroid.
He also sports a rather large semi-circular scar on the left side of
his torso from his shoulder to his hip.]
TENCHI: Good morning, grandpa.
[KATSUHITO finishes up and stands up straight.]
KATSUHITO: Hello, Tenchi, ready for your morning practices?
TENCHI: Uh, not right now. Actually I was going to see how Makoto was
doing.
KATSUHITO: She isn't here.
TENCHI: What? When did she leave?
KATSUHITO: Late last night, after you had gone to bed. [beat] She left
you a note.
[He motions to a table by the doorway. TENCHI quickly moves over to
it and picks up a small, notebook sized whiteboard. As he reads it,
MAKOTO'S voice can be heard.]
MAKOTO: [V.O.] I found a friend of mine and had to go see her. Thanks
for everything you've done for me. Love, Makoto.
[TENCHI looks up]
TENCHI: I wonder who she knows in the city?
[Cut to a building hallway, several wooden doors adorn the walls
between which are extravagant pictures. AMI and MAKOTO are walking
down the hallway towards the camera. AMI is wearing her long white
labcoat and MAKOTO is still wearing the clothes she was wearing last
night.]
MAKOTO: I still can't believe that this place exists. I mean, I was
hoping to find some vestiges of civilization, but this city is
amazing. [beat] Hey, Ami, you haven't told me how you came to be here
yet.
AMI: Actually, I got here before the asteroid hit. When I was
studying in Germany all those years ago I got an internship at one of
the Lexcorp divisions as a Chemist assistant. It was a lot of strange
work, I was always getting research assignments on spacial mineral,
like recovered debris by satellites or leftovers from crashed meteors
and shooting stars. But anyway, during my time there, I heard about
this project, a city designed to survive in the case of global
apocalypse. It was an amazing bit of foresight by Mr. Luthor, but
lagging way behind when I heard about it.
MAKOTO: So this is that project?
AMI: Well, sort of.
[cut to another hallway as AMI and MAKOTO turn a corner and head down
it.]
AMI: The city was always outfitted with a large shield to protect it
in case of falling debris, but it was a dome-like apparatus that
blocked out, not only anything falling or shooting towards the city,
but the clouds and the sun. [beat] When the first sightings of
Ragnarok came, I ran here to find Luthor already here and trying to
push up the development schedule. I wrote up a couple plans and,
introducing myself as a former intern, approached Luthor with designs
for the column-like shield currently up. He offered employment as a
technical supervisor and I helped him get the shield up in time to
avoid the Tsunami.
[Cut to a glass door, beyond which AMI and MAKOTO can be seen
approaching. All is silent until AMI pulls out a card and shows it to
a camera above the door and the glass slides open, sound resumes.]
AMI: Only about seventy percent of the city was formed by then, so we
scavenged all the supplies we could get and put them in the large
underground bunker under the city. There's still some supplies down
there now, but they're being saved for future repairs or additions to
the city. Every now and then some punk group raids the place and they
manage to run off with a small amount of metal or silicon, but it's
insignificant compared to what's down there. They probably sell it to
the street doctors for cyberoid enhancements. They're quite popular
and, unfortunately, necessary for many of the seriously wounded
individuals who didn't get within the confines of the shield until
after Ragnarok hit.
MAKOTO: Money [beat] How does that work, there's not foreign trade or
anything so how useful is money?
AMI: It's human intolerance. [beat] Even here, on the brink of
extinction, people won't work the fields or do certain jobs, so
Lexcorp created a currency that people use to trade for goods or
services. It's actually like a micro-economy, we have the ability to
create all the goods needed, but we don't want to carry those goods
around, so we have money. It works quite well actually, many people
are dependent on each other, so, in the long run, crime is nearly
extinct. Except for those street doctors like I said before. [beat]
Lexcorp employees are provided for, we don't use the currency system.
[AMI holds up her ID Card]
AMI: This thing is worth more than a billion dollars. Oh, yes. Lexcorp
is an American company, so we use U.S. Currency. Dollars and cents
and so on. Not that there's actually any U.S. to honor the currency,
so there's a small mint in the basement.
MAKOTO: Strange. [beat] So what do you do these days?
AMI: That's the big problem.
[Cut to the inside of a dimly lit computer laboratory. A door opens
throwing light across the room, lighting up all sorts of terminals and
small models all over the place. AMI and MAKOTO walk in and AMI heads
towards one of the larger terminal.]
AMI: Here, let me show you.
[AMI hits a few buttons and the schematic of the city (as seen in Day
1) appears on one of the screens.]
AMI: This is the city, the shield, and about twenty or so miles out in
each direction. [beat] I said that the shield went up at the last
minute, right? Since there was so little time, it couldn't be tested
against all weather conditions, but we hoped that everything we tested
for would be sufficient.
MAKOTO: It wasn't.
AMI: [sighs] Yesterday we reanalyzed the shield and found several
problems that could lead to it's eventual disintegration. Best
guesses on our end say that we enter the danger zone in about 2 or 3
years, and redline is a solid 4. We need to find a way to reinforce
the shields or it collapses on the city and a few million people die
instantly.
MAKOTO: Isn't there a backup shield or something.
AMI: Yes, but it's weak. An energy field can be erected around the
outer shield and be held for one year at current energy consumption.
It was never designed for prolonged use, just to hold up until we can
repair damages to the outer shield. So we're trying to find a
solution that we can implement in a single year on a shield that has
over a 100 miles of area.
MAKOTO: [frowns] What's your expectation?
AMI: [sighs again] Unless we come up with some sort of breakthrough,
we've got five years left in this city and then, we're dead in the
water.
MAKOTO: Just as soon as I find sanctuary, I find that it's doomed for
disaster.
[The door to the lab opens and lights up the room again. A man in a
suit walks in and looks around.]
MAN: Dr. Mizuno! [rushes over to AMI] You're needed in the Chairman's
office immediately!
[AMI looks from the man to MAKOTO strangely, then rushes over to a
counter and grabs a device of some sort.]
AMI: [holding up the device] Come on!
[AMI, the MAN, and MAKOTO rush out of the room and the door closes
behind them, blanketing the camera in total darkness.]
VOICE: [V.O.; through static] Recon1 to base, come in base.
SYLIA: This is base, go ahead Sabre Beta.
[The darkness sweeps away to the left as the camera pans right past a
pillar to show a control room with a large array of screens before a
wide control panel and the back of a chair. The screens show a vague
map of a snowy plane with a small grayish building in the center and
four colored dots in various places outside the building. A blue one
has an ID tag on it that says Sabre Omega.]
BETA: [V.O.; through static] This is Recon1, pushing across the
western front, reporting in. [large squeal of static] Visual
communications require too much bandwidth, vocal are obviously working
fine.
SYLIA: Good, how is the suit handling?
BETA: [V.O.; through static] There is a significant reduction in
maneuverability, I think the joints may be stiffening in the cold.
Temperature scanners are frozen I think, they've been reporting the
same temperature for quite a while now. Extremities are barely
responding, I think the next sensor grid will have to be torso based.
[Camera pans around the room until it shows SYLIA in the chair typing
up a storm while talking with SABRE BETA]
SYLIA: Suggestion entered, anything else you need to report?
BETA: [V.O.; through static] Yeah, its friggin' cold out here!
SYLIA: [smiles] I understand.
BETA: [V.O.; through static] No, no, you don't understand. Body
temperature regulators are freezing up, it's gotten progressively
colder inside the suit.
SYLIA: [smile fades] You should head back to base then before you
enter dangers levels.
BETA: [V.O.; through static] I'm far from there, but I am heading
back. Oh, another comment. Jumpjet intakes are covered with ice
still, you'll have to take another approach there.
SYLIA: I already have schematics for a better design, we'll give it a
shot on Sabre Omega when she goes out later.
BETA: [V.O.; through static] Understood, I'll be back in about twenty
minutes. Recon1 out.
[SYLIA taps a button and the static disappears she continues typing.]
MAN: [Off Screen] Sylia?
[SYLIA turns around quickly and the camera pans to be behind her. The
man [HIROSHI YAMASUOI] is wearing a grey labcoat loosely over a pair
of black slacks and a pinstripe shirt. He's holding a clipboard with
an electronic readout.
SYLIA: Sorry, didn't notice you there. [she stands, the camera pans
up to be over her shoulder] Keep an eye on Sabre Beta and keep the
sensor droids moving or they'll freeze.
HIROSHI: [nods] Hai.
[HIROSHI heads up to the chair as SYLIA stands to move to the elevator
HIROSHI was previously standing before. As she walks away, you can
see she's wearing slightly altered versions of the legs and lower
torso piece from her hardsuit. She steps into the elevator and the
doors close and shoots down.]
[Cut to a spot inside the elevator tube. The car appears above and
shoots past the camera at incredible speeds]
[Cut to the inside of the car. As the doors open, SYLIA walks out
into a hallway that looks like a tube with several hatchways on each
side. There are various people wearing labcoats walking around. She
goes a short distance down the hall before stopping before a hatch.
She looks up at the nameplate over the door that says ROMANOVA.
Entering the hatch, she steps into a modern looking laboratory with
lots of mechanized equipment lying around. A man (VLADIMIR ROMANOVA)
operating a computer and a woman are in the room. The woman (NAMI
ROMANOVA) has a sensor control attached to her hand and is
manipulating a mechanical arm behind a glass window. She turns around
as the hatchway is closed behind Sylia.]
NAMI: Sylia!
SYLIA: [nods] Nami. [beat; looks around] Where's Nene?
[VLADIMIR looks up from his console and looks to NAMI, she nervously
looks around.]
SYLIA: [blinks] Okay, so she's not confined to quarters, where is she?
VLADIMIR: [slowly] She's out.
SYLIA: Did she skip to the training simulator again?
[VLADIMIR looks down, then over to NAMI]
NAMI: He mean's she's OUT, out.
SYLIA: Out? [eyes widen] How could she be out? I was AT the surface
deck, I didn't see her signal.
VLADIMIR: She reprogrammed the flight deck computers to let her get
out with her Sabre Pink. She's quite an accomplished computer
technician.
SYLIA: I still didn't see her signal out there. She couldn't have
gotten to the main sensor net, I programmed that myself.
[NAMI and VLADIMIR produce small smiles and turn back to their work.]
SYLIA: And I suppose you couldn't have talked her out of it? You know
it's dangerous to leave the compound while we're still outfitting the
suits to the sudden temperature drop.
NAMI: [over shoulder] She's fine out there, her suit is more than
capable to handle the temperature differences.
SYLIA: How can you be so sure?
NAMI: Doctor Raven assures her of it.
SYLIA: Raven is in on this too?
NAMI: She'll be fine, come here and look at this while you at it.
SYLIA: [sighs] I know this was a scientific outpost but the rules I
established are necessary to provide for all your safety. [walks over
over to NAMI] I confined Nene to these quarters not more than an hour
ago, and she's gone when I come here, not to mention there's a
conspiracy to keep this knowledge from me. I'm pleased she has such
interest in becoming a Sabre, but she has to learn to follow the rules
if she's going to work in the military aspect of this base. Look at
me, there's so many problems I haven't had time to take off my
hardsuit all day.
NAMI: Fine. Look at this.
[SYLIA looks down past the glass window to see an arm apparatus from a
hardsuit.]
SYLIA: Okay, it's the left arm of a class 105.
NAMI: Watch.
[NAMI taps a few buttons with her free hand and a vent behind the
glass opens. An image of a thermometer appears against the glass as
the temperature drops slowly.]
NAMI: The suits have had several cases of stiffening when subjected to
cold. Initially we thought it was because the exterior flex-fiber
joints were becoming solid, however all our tests on the joints showed
that they were correctly rated for 78 degrees Kelvin. The real
problem for the extremities was that the hydraulics and circuitry
housings were freezing, causing ruptures that would inhibit the
message flow. So Dr. Raven and I came up with a new housing for the
joints.
[NAMI flexes the hand and moves the arm around rabidly while SYLIA
gazes at the thermometer as it drops below -200 degrees Celsius. NAMI
waves the hand around quickly and a crack appears on the shielding.
Another wave causes the joint shielding and lower arm casing to
shatter leaving only the circuitry and hydraulics in their new
housing.]
NAMI: As you can see, the joints will last longer than the suit will
now. In the cold that is. Although we haven't had much problems with
combat yet.
SYLIA: Very good work, Nami. But will it do the same in actual
conditions?
NAMI: Ask Nene. Raven outfitted Sabre Pink with these housings before
she went out.
SYLIA: [sighs] Very well, if this works I might forget about what she
did to get out of the facility.
[SYLIA turns and heads for the hatch. Before she leaves, she looks
over her shoulder at NAMI and VLADIMIR.]
SYLIA: Although I don't want to see this sort of behavior anymore.
[She exits. NAMI and VLADIMIR smile to each other.]
[Cut to the an exterior shot of the surface floor of the facility. A
large door enters into a hanger of sorts attached to a smaller
building without windows beside a large mountain. Atop the hanger is a
large array of equipment ranging from sensor screens, to satellite
dishes, to radar arrays. Pan right until the facility has been out of
sight for a few seconds and come across a pink colored hardsuit
walking easily away from the facility. The visor is up and shows
NENE'S face through a thick plate of glass.]
NENE: [V.O.] It looks like another storm is following the one we're
in. Coming in pretty fast.
RAVEN: [V.O.; through static] Pull down your visor and activate the
Doppler radar. [large burst of static] And activate your secondary
array, I think I'm starting to lose you.
NENE: [V.O.] Right.
[NENE reaches up and pulls down her visor.]
RAVEN: [V.O.] That's better. I'm getting your signal feed now, looks
like you're right, large storm moving in. Better tell the boss bout
thisoh!
NENE: [V.O.] Doctor Raven? Are you alright?
VOICE: [V.O.] No he's not alright and I'd like it if you came back in
now.
NENE: [V.O.] Sylia! Come on, I just got out here.
SYLIA: [V.O.] Get back in now and I might let you even get NEAR the
hangar again.
NENE: [V.O.] Oh, alright.
SYLIA: [V.O.] You're so lucky that you'rewhat's that? Hold on,
Doctor Raven has something to say to you.
RAVEN: [V.O.] Nene, look to your right.
[NENE stops and look right.]
NENE: [V.O.] What?
RAVEN: [V.O.] Turn up the acuity of your sensors, I think I saw
something. Close in on range of sight only.
[Cut to the inside of NENE'S helmet. The high-definition picture of
nothing is covered with a green grid and zoom into one of the squares.
A target is identified and locked onto.]
NENE: [V.O.] What is it?
RAVEN: [V.O.] Switch to Infrared. [beat] Yes, Sylia, I did give her
the prototype sensor pack.
[The screen turns reddish and a mulitcolored figure emerges lying on
the ground.]
NENE: [V.O.] It looks like a body.
RAVEN: [V.O.] You're right, but it looks like it's suffering from
hypothermia, the heat signature is fading. [beat] Uh-huh. [beat] I
know the-- [beat] yes, I know. [beat] Nene, get whoever that is and
head on back here.
NENE: [V.O.] Yes sir.
[The view returns to normal as the ground starts moving beneath the
camera as a small piece of cloth sticking out of the snow starts to
get closer.]
[Cut to an exterior shot as the hardsuit nears a snow-covered body
clothed in rags.]
RAVEN: [V.O.] Check your scanners again, Nene, cycle through them for
me. There's something strange about that infrared scan I want to look
at again.
NENE: [V.O.] I'm kinda busy at the moment... hold on.
[Cut to the inside of an office. A small computer array is here
beside a long table with loads of mechanical junk on it. Sounds of
welding and screeching metal is heard from outside of the office in
the actual hangar. RAVEN is sitting at the computer console while
SYLIA is standing behind him. The screen shows NENE'S point of view
as she brushes off the snow covering the body. The screen suddenly
pauses then filters back in slowly. The body is an array of colors
from blue to red to orange to yellow while the ground around it has a
faint yellowish hue to it.]
[SYLIA'S eye's light up.]
SYLIA: Is this the infrared view?
RAVEN: I ... I hope not.
[RAVEN holds down a key on the computer and talks into a small
microphone attached to a headset he's wearing.]
RAVEN: Nene, is this infrared we're looking at?
NENE: [V.O.] Yeah, it's quite annoying to look at, are you finished
yet?
RAVEN: What's that faint heat signature over the ground?
NENE: [V.O.] I don't know, just picked it up right now.
SYLIA: [looks down to RAVEN] Have you fixed the jump-jet problems yet?
RAVEN: Hold on, Nene. [turns to SYLIA] We're still having them?
SYLIA: Yes, the intake jets are freezing over.
RAVEN: News to me. Then she still has the problem.
SYLIA: Get her out of there, NOW!
RAVEN: [nods; turns microphone back on] Nene, Sylia wants you to get
out of that area now. I agree with her in this case, there's
something strange going on beneath you and we don't need to risk you
getting hurt.
NENE: [V.O.] I'm moving as fast as I OW!
[The screen goes to static]
SYLIA: [grabs RAVEN'S shoulder] What?!
RAVEN: Ackk! Geeze, [beat] Nene, what's wrong? We lost visual.
NENE: [V.O.] There's some loose snow out here, one of my steps fell
through. I think one of the sensor dishes is broken, I lost infrared
as well.
RAVEN: Get the hell out of there.
NENE: [V.O.] I'm trywoah, real loose snow here. I'll be fine
Iiiee, Ahh
[Static fills the room. SYLIA freezes.]
RAVEN: Nene, what was that last part, I lost you.
[Static]
RAVEN: Nene, come in!
[Static. Eventually the automatic cutoffs close the connection.
RAVEN turns to look at SYLIA.]
RAVEN: [gravely] We've lost her.
[The screen fills with fire and the image disappears in the flames.
Pan backwards to show a large metallic fire pit. A woman [REI HINO]
with long black hair wearing a red robe is sitting in front of the
fire facing the flames. She is still for several seconds before
raising her head and turning around to face the camera.]
[Cut around to show a hatchway door. It slowly opens and a woman
[LINNA YAMAZAKI] sticks her head though the door. She has shoulder
length dark brown hair with a green headband.]
REI: [O.S.] Ms. Yamazaki, Good Afternoon.
LINNA: Uhm, Hi, Rei.
[LINNA steps through the hatchway and the camera pans back to show the
whole room. LINNA is wearing a tight fitting jumpsuit with various
jacks along the legs and arms for connections into a hardsuit.]
LINNA: Whatcha doing?
REI: I'm just trying to see if I can read anything in this fire. It's
not the same as the great fire I used to have in Tokyo, that fire had
burned for generations, this one is vastly inferior in many respects.
I don't think I'm going to find many answers.
LINNA: Is something bothering you?
REI: [nods] Yes. [beat] For a long time now, I've been debating
whether or not I should give somebody something I've had for years
now. I was supposed to give it to her when she was ten, but I don't
think she should have it. It's a pandora's box of troubles and I'm
not sure she deserves the pain.
LINNA: Well, what is it?
REI: It's just a little trinket I got from Dr. Stingray.
LINNA: Sylia?
REI: No, her father, Katsuhito.
LINNA: You knew Knatsuhito Stingray?
REI: [smiles] Yes. He was a good man, [beat; smile fades] and he
didn't deserve to die the way he did.
LINNA: What happened?
REI: [shakes her head] It's in the past now, it's not important.
LINNA: Well, I don't know Katsuhito, but I know Sylia very well. And
I know that she respects her father a great deal, and is very pained
by the fact that he died when she was so young. I think that anything
she can get about her father she'll cherish, even if it's bad.
REI: It's worse than you know.
[The hatchway to the room opens up suddenly and a man in a looser
fitting jumpsuit rushes into the room.]
MAN: Sorry to interrupt Ms. Hino. [turns to LINNA] Linna, Sylia wants
you up on the flight deck immediately.
LINNA: [nods] I'm on my way.
[The man ducks back out of the room and closes the door behind him.]
LINNA: I better be going.
[She stands]
REI: Oh, what was it you came here for?
LINNA: It's not important right now, I'll come back later.
[LINNA opens the hatchway and ducks through. REI looks down in
thought. The fire flares up behind her suddenly and she turns to look
at it.]
REI: Huh?
[Pan inwards to the fire. A scene is playing itself in the flames.
People are running through the corridors of the facility while klaxons
are going off all over. The flames disappear as the image becomes
real. A man comes into view. At first we see his back then he
glances back towards the camera once and we see it is a middle aged
man [KATSUHITO STINGRAY] with a mustache that's slightly graying with
his hair. He turns back down the corridor and runs into an elevator.]
KATSUHITO: Surface.
[The doors close and the car quickly rises to the surface hangar. He
steps out into the chaos of technicians running about strapping down
equipment and securing vehicles. A loud siren goes off and a voice
comes over a loud PA system that is KATSUHITO'S own.]
VOICE: [V.O.] Incoming vehicle on collision course. All personnel take
cover.
[KATSUHITO ducks behind a grating while other technicians run for
cover. One of the hangar doors suddenly collapses in on itself as a
large vehicle crashes into the hangar and skids across the floor
coming to an ungraceful stop. Outside, is a windstorm and the snow is
falling for the first time on still green grass and running streams.
A secondary door closes over the open hole as people rush to the
vehicle and rip open it's doors. KATSUHITO runs over just in time to
see a raven hared woman in a red sailor fuku [SAILOR MARS] drag a
woman out of the car and into the care of the other technicians.
KATSUHITO'S eyes widen as he runs over quickly.]
KATSUHITO: [pushing people out of the way] Get out of my way! Coming
through! MOVE! That's my wife!
[KATSUHITO gets over to SAILOR MARS and the woman. Closer up it is
obvious that the woman is pregnant and the technicians are handling
her as carefully but as quickly as they can.]
[MARS turns to face KATSUHITO]
MARS: You're Katsuhito Stingray?
KATSUHITO: Yes, that's me. Did you bring my wife here all the way
from Tokyo?
[Everyone picks up MS. STINGRAY and rush her to a larger elevator than
the one KATSUHITO came up on. KATSUHITO and MARS are in the car next
to the MS. STINGRAY, she is unconsious.]
MARS: I found her on the way, she told me how to get here but she's
badly wounded.
KATSUHITO: [holding MS. STINGRAY'S hand] Hold on, honey, I'm here.
[looks up to MARS] Thank you so much, I don't know how I can repay
you.
[MS. STINGRAY moans and starts writhing in pain. KATSUHITO looks to
everyone else in the elevator]
KATSUHITO: We've got to get her to the infirmary.
[The doors open and everyone rushes out. They close on the camera
cutting to darkness. When the doors open again, they are in another
room with lots of chairs and empty arm tables about. MARS is sitting
on one of the chairs and turns to face the camera as KATSUHITO walks
past. He moves over to sit down next to her.]
KATSUHITO: [softly] Sailor Mars?
MARS: Yes?
KATSUHITO: I thank you for bringing my wife here. Thanks to you, my
medical doctors here were able to save the life of my daughter. [beat;
strained] I only wish that she could grow up with a m-mother.
MARS: [places a hand on KATSUHITO'S] I'm sorry.
KATSUHITO: [On the verge of tears] It's all right, if not for you I'd
have nothing. [beat] I didn't want anyone to know, I couldn't risk
bringing my wife here until it was almost too late. Butbut they
found out, they tried to kill me. They were after my wife and I
couldn't do anything about it. [wipes his eyes in anticipation of
tears; his face darkens slightly] It's Quincy's fault. Him and
everyone else at GENOM. I'll get ... somehow I'll...
MARS: It's gone now, they all are. Nothing is left in Tokyo, it's all
beneath a hundred meters of water.
KATSUHITO: [Looks up to MARS determined] No, he knew, he would never
embrace fate. He's somewhere, he can't be dead. GENOM knew, THEY
KNEW! Quincy has known the asteroid was going to hit for years! And
he never told the public, he's cost so many lives. [long beat] He's
around, and I'm going to find him.
MARS: How will you find him? [beat] There's nothing out there anymore,
it's all dust. You have a daughter to raise now, and a sanctuary to
raise her in. Don't let this lust for vengeance destroy your
daughter's future. [beat] I know what it's like not to have a father
or a mother, and I wouldn't want that on anyone else.
KATSUHITO: [looks down at the floor] Stay here.
MARS: What?
KATSUHITO: It's the least I can do for you. Like you said there's
nothing out there anymore, stay here. We're safe from everything down
here, even GENOM.
MARS: Where else would I go? Of course I'll stay.
KATSUHITO: Thank you. [beat] There's nothing but scientists down here,
I need someone who isn't a physics or engineering doctorate. [beat] I
need someone to help me raise my new daughter.
MARS: I don't know about all that, we've just barely met.
KATSUHITO: There's a lot of time now, more time than ever.
MARS: [grim] I know. [beat; raises hand] I'm Rei Hino, pleased to meet
you.
KATSUHITO: [takes hand] Katsuhito Stingray. Come and meet my
daughter, Sylia.
[The image is engulfed in flames and fades away. Pan back from the
camera to show REI looking on intently.]
MARS: [softly] You weren't safe from GENOM like you thought.
[MARS holds up a data tape in her hand that's marked 'SYLIA
STINGRAY'.]
MARS: I'm just afraid that if I show her this, she'll continue that
worthless crusade you started against GENOM. She's got such
potential, it would kill me to see her throw everything away in
vengeance like you did.
[MARS looks at the flame as it jumps around for a few seconds]
MARS: [sadly] I know, it should be her decision, not mine.
[She stands up with the datatape in hand and walks to the hatchway.
As she reaches for the door, cut to darkness. A few thin streams of
light arc down to a cavern floor. Two snow covered forms are lying on
a small pile of snow.]
[A red light appears on one of the forms and it begins to sit up. As
the snow falls from it, we see it's really Sabre Pink. She raises her
hand to lift the visor.]
NENE: [breathes deeply] What happened?
[She looks around briefly at the darkness around her and thin stream
of light from far above. She looks beside her to the still form in
the snow.]
NENE: Oh, almost forgot.
[NENE reaches over and pulls her out of the snow over to an area of
the dark cave where there's no snow but still close enough to the
light to see. She stops for a second.]
NENE: Doctor Raven? [beat] Dr. Raven this is Nene come in. [beat]
Stingray base this is Sabre Pink, anyone come in. [beat] Damn!
[NENE continues brushing snow off the heavily clothed figure. She
leans down and pulls off some of the head rags to get a look at the
face. It's a woman with long brown hair that's slack against her face
due to sweat.]
NENE: Hang in there you. [beat; looks around] This is going to be
difficult. [beat] Activate Vocal Recognition Software.
VOICE: [V.O.] Voice Recognition Software active, Artificial
Intelligence active, enhanced prediction movement system malfunction,
system disabled.
NENE: That's not too bad, I can manage moving around.
[She pulls her visor down.]
NENE: Infrared.
VOICE: [V.O.] Enhanced Sensor Packaged damaged, unable to comply.
NENE: System check.
VOICE: [V.O.] Sixty percent of systems, nominal. Malfunctions in
motor control, visual aids, enhanced sensor package, thermal control.
NENE: Thermal control?! [beat] Current temperature.
VOICE: [V.O.] Internal temperature seventy-five point two degrees.
Body temperature steady at ninety eight point eight degreees.
External temperature sixty one point four degrees.
NENE: Sixty one degrees? Why is it so hot?
VOICE: [V.O.] Insufficient data.
NENE: Sensor control, enhanced scan.
VOICE: [V.O.] Enhanced scan active.
NENE: Target Alpha's detailed condition.
VOICE: [V.O.] Processing, target Alpha. Female. Eighteen years of
age. Height 168 centimeters. Blood pressure, elevated. Body
temperature, ninety six point four degrees. Three bodily enhancements
located. Right, mid forearm, cybernetic replacement, currently
damaged and inoperative. Left knee to middle thigh, cybernetic
replacement, currently active. Eye's, right and left, cybernetic
enhancement to correct retinal damage. Colour change from brown to
blue. More data available.
NENE: That's not necessary. [beat] Damage to communications array.
VOICE: [V.O.] No damage detected.
NENE: Reason for communications blackout.
VOICE: [V.O.] Signal blocked by minerals in surroundings.
NENE: Hmm, how far does this cave go.
VOICE: [V.O.] Unable to ascertain, sensor damage.
NENE: You can tell me the specific problems of this woman but you
can't tell me how big this cave is?!
VOICE: [V.O.] Insufficient data. Rephrase question.
NENE: Forget it.
[Flips up her visor and gets up to looks around.]
NENE: Activate shoulder light.
VOICE: [V.O.] Active.
[A small panel flips open and a pair of bright lights emerge. One
points directly ahead and the other seems to follow the movements of
NENE'S head. The cavern is very tall and long in both directions.]
NENE: Either I wait for someone to come find me, or I try to save
myself. [beat] It's possible they don't know where I am and even if
they searched, the snow up there will cover my tracks quick. If I
can't count on a savior, I've got to do this myself.
VOICE: [V.O.] Target alpha update.
NENE: Huh? Oh, go ahead.
VOICE: [V.O.] Extended condition determined. Subject suffering from
advanced stages of Hypothermia.
NENE: Great. [beat] All right, deactivate locking systems.
VOICE: [V.O.] Locking systems disengaged.
[The sides of NENE'S suit sprout open locks. NENE reaches up and
pulls off her helmet, shivering once. Pushing at the torso it splits
open at the sides and she climbs out of the suit. She stands beside
the suit for a second in her flimsy and almost see through softsuit
and looks around. After a moment, she rushes over to the woman and
drags her over to the suit. She strips off the mounds of clothes and
rags off the woman leaving her naked then takes off her softsuit and
slips it onto the other woman. It's a very tight fit, the woman is
obviously larger than NENE, but she manages to get it on her. She
picks up the woman and puts her into the hardsuit that automatically
adjusts itself for the new occupant. After she locks the hardsuit
back up again she starts wrapping herself in the clothes the woman was
previously wearing. Picking up the helmet afterwards, she moves
closer to the suit and speaks into the helmet in her hands.]
NENE: Increase internal temperature. Engage corrective health
measures for occupant.
VOICE: [V.O.] Body irregularity detected, treating for hypothermia.
NENE: [sighs] Good.
[She puts the helmet on the hardsuit and locks it down then leans
against the hardsuit while lying down.]
NENE: Now what do I do?
[Pan backwards away from NENE upwards through the cavern ceiling,
through forty feet of snow, into the snowstorm above that immediately
clouds the camera.]
[The sound of a door being bashed open is heard as the camera quickly
fades to LUTHOR'S office as AMI, MAKOTO, and MERCER barge into the
room. The camera pans over quickly to show LUTHOR lying on the floor
clutching his chest.]
MERCER: LEX!
[AMI runs past MERCER and over to LUTHOR on the floor. She pulls his
arms from his chest and rips his shirt open. Placing the device she
picked up before against his chest, she pulls a trigger and a hissing
sound is made from the device.]
AMI: [to MAKOTO] Under Luthor's desk is a briefcase, go get it!
[MAKOTO runs over to the desk and looks beneath it. There are several
buttons affixed to the underside and one large briefcase. She grabs
the handle and pulls it out and rushes to AMI.]
AMI: Thank you.
[AMI opens up the briefcase to show a large LCD screen and several
strange looking devices.]
MERCER: What's wrong?!
AMI: I'm trying to find out, just a second.
[The screens go blank the redraw a picture of LUTHOR. Several dots
appear on his chest and lines of text appear next to all of them.]
MERCER: He's in pain, DO something!
AMI: Shut up! I'm trying.
[AMI scans the screen a couple more times before picking up a wired
device and attaching it to LUTHOR'S chest. She taps on the screen a
few times and another hissing sound is heard. LUTHOR stops convulsing
and lays silent.]
MERCER: Is he dead.
AMI: [breathes] Not yet.
MERCER: What do you mean, 'Not yet?'
AMI: He's BEEN dying for the last six years. If it wasn't for me,
he'd be dead already.
MERCER: What do you mean?
AMI: Luthor has an advanced immunity deficiency that's causing his
body to slowly degrade in health. He's been taking nutritional
boosters to slow the process but now his system is rejecting the
boosters. The supplemental antibodies are attacking his own system
now.
MERCER: Do something!
AMI: [looks to MERCER with anger in her eyes] I've been TRYING to do
something for years! This is the best I've been able to come up with.
Now that it's stopped working, I have NOTHING. He's going to die or
fall into a coma or something within the next few days that will
completely incapacitate him. There's nothing we can do.
MERCER: That's impossible, there must be something! He's saved
hundreds of people that were close to death, surely there's something
that can be done with cybernetics or something.
AMI: [looks down] I can't let that sort of multination happen to him.
MERCER: If it will save his life then do it!
AMI: I can't.
MERCER: WHY?
AMI: That's confidential. I can't tell you. I just can't authorize the
use of any cybernetics or mutational genetics on him and that's final.
[MERCER stands up with rage in her eyes]
MERCER: You just want him to die!
[MERCER storms out of the room. AMI looks to MAKOTO with guilt.]
AMI: You wanted to know what I do these days.
MAKOTO: I'm sorry I asked.
AMI: [stands] Come on, help me take him to the infirmary.
[Cut to a large dark room filled with desks with computers on top of
them. A single computer is lit and someone is sitting before the
comptuer. Slowly pan towards the person sitting at the computer.]
WOMAN: [V.O.] Are you sure you want this done?
MERCER: Absolutely.
WOMAN: [V.O.] Okay, just provide the parts and we'll to the carryover.
MERCER: Everything will become available for you.
WOMAN: [V.O.] What about payment?
MERCER: I'll give you the keys to the stockpile bunkers beneath
Lexcorp.
WOMAN: [V.O.] More than enough. We'll be waiting for you and your
patient.
MERCER: Very good.
[Pan up to the screen. A window shows a woman's face briefly before
she moves away and the screen turns blue with the text: 'LEXCORP
VIDPHONES, THANK YOU FOR CALLING.' MERCER turns away from the screen.]
MERCER: I won't let you die Lex. After everything you've done for me,
I'll not let you die.
[Cut to black. Show caption across screen:
Day 2: Fire and Ice

[Fade to black.]
[Roll credits.]
Producers Notes:
This story is actually part 2 of the pilot episode. Time constraints
forced me to split it up into two days.
My limited access to BGC has caused me to heavily rewrite just about
everything here. I'm well aware that Nene's parents weren't
Scientists, and that they were much stricter than I portrayed them to
be, but we're going to call this a bit of creative liscensing and just
pretent this is the way things are. I hope I've included enough
cliffhangers here to keep people reading. I'm quite happy with this
project and will probably continue writing it for a while, despite any
flames I may get for abusing the characters.
I think I've included enough hints for you to figure out who the
woman in the rags is. If not, you'll find out on Day 3.
This series will have to get a PG-13 rating on it since so far both
parts have featured full frontal nudity, abet briefly.
Many thanks to the following people:
Andy McDermott aka Payndz, for providing Bubblegum Crisis A2Z, a
resource of knowledge that I couldn't have completed this story
without.
Jeanne Hedge, whose page of Synopsis has helped a great deal in
establishing what happed in the 'normal' timeline so I could deform it
to what it is now.
Mark Waid, Alex Ross, Elliot S. Maggin and the rest of the people
affiliated with KINGDOM COME, for giving me a bunch of ideas
concerning DC Characters and things that drive them insane.
Chris Davies, who, among the infinite inspiration he's given me, also
quirked my interest enough to seek out information on Kingdom Come and
eventually read the book. A few of the characters also have been
modeled after Chris's versions of them.
Chris Willmore and the Ranma2096 authors, since that's where the idea
of this story began. I'll bet though, he had an easier time than I'm
having now.
Christopher Angel, who got me interested in Ah! Megamisama (Oh! My
Goddess if you will) whose characters have yet to appear, but mark my
words, they will.
Of course, I don't think any list of people to thank is complete
without a slight tip of the hat to the Undocumented Features authors,
Megazone, Gryphon, and Rerob. I think they have something to do with
everything I write, but I won't go into that.
Finally:
"Superman" is owned and distributed by DC Comics. "Tenchi Muyou" is
owned and distributed by Pioneer Entertainment. "Bubblegum Crisis" is
currently being distributed by AnimEigo. And of course: "Sailor Moon"
was created by Naoko Takeuchi and brought to North America by DiC and
Mixx Entertainment. While this script contains elements from each of
these copyrighted sources, this script as a whole is copyright 1998 by

"[UNIVERSAL] POPULATION: None
It is known that there are an infinate number of worlds, simply
because there is an infinate amount of space for them to be in.
However, not every one of them is inhabited. Theverfore, there must
be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by
infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average
population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero.
>From this it follows that the population of the whole universe is also
zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely
the products of a deranged imagination."
