There actually really was a person called Cologne (Khu Long). He, yes
you heard me right, HE was a writer of Chinese martial arts novels, not
that he practiced a day of martial arts in his life. Though all of his
novels were considered bestsellers, the strange thing was, every single
one of them was written for pleasure, not money. Why's it strange?
Because it was the only source of his income. Needless to say, he wasn't
a very happy man. He died in poverty at around forty.
Why did Rumiko-sensei write Cologne into her manga? Well, apparently,
Khu Long is well loved by the Japanese. All of his novels were
translated, and he was considered one of the best writers of martial
arts novels. Now, this is just theory, but I suspect Rumiko-sensei or
one of her helpers read his biography. They probably decided something
like, "He didn't deserve that! We should give him what he does deserve.
The final outcome: the old ghoul we're all so familiar with.
He's my theory on why Ranma 1/2 is populated with characters like
Perfume, Cologne, Shampoo, Herb, Mint, Lime, and Saffron. Rumiko-sensei
got the idea from Khu Long's name, which just happens to sound the same
as Cologne in it's Japanese pronunciation. If you notice, Cologne is the
only name that can be coherently pronouced in Chinese. Serves as
evidence to this theory.
Well, bye for now!
