Ranma 1/2: The Dragon's Dawning Series
By Wesley Bridges
Based on the characters by Rumiko Takahashi.
Episode 7: The Dragon's Dawning
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A few moments before 4:00, Ranma and Mousse took their positions
on the vacant lot. Both stood looking at each other without
saying a word. At 4:00 Kipp began the fight with a swift lowering
of his hand.
Ranma: (thinking) Ha! This'll be a piece of cake! (aloud) Alright,
here I come!
Ranma charged Mousse preparing a series of punches. Mousse
threw his chained weapons at Ranma. Ranma blocked, but the
chains wrapped around his wrists.
Ranma: Right were I want you!
Ranma tugged the chains causing Mousse to be pushed towards him
as he lost his balance. Surpisingly, however, he regained his
balance and landed a Fist of the White Swan onto Ranma.
Mousse: You were saying?!
Ranma: I'm just warming up.
Ranma charged again, this time using the Chestnut Fist. Mousse
was caught off guard and sent sprawling onto his back.
Ranma: (to Kipp) And you said you trained him?
Kipp: I'd keep an eye on the fight if I were you, Ranma.
Mousse: I'm not through with you by far, Saotome!
Mousse threw a handful of Egg Bombs at Ranma. Ranma dodged the
first few, but got hit by the later ones. Ranma flipped up in
the air and came at Mousse with a flying Kick. Mousse rolled
underneath and wrapped Ranma with his chains, then threw him
into a tree.
Ranma: (thinking) He's improved, but I can still take him. A couple
more hits with the Chestnut Fist ought to do it. Here I go.
Ranma charged Mousse with the Chestnut Fist flaring. A
blue-green aura surrounded Mousse as Ranma neared him. Unfazed
Ranma continued his assault.
Mousse: Now, Ranma, take this! FIST OF THE NIGHT HAWK!
Cologne and Shampoo's eyes widened as the name of the attack
reached their ears. Mousse had learned another technique?
What was this going to do to Ranma?
Ranma neared Mousse and the wind of the Chestnut Fist could
be felt by Mousse. Mousse crouched and launched an uppercut
just as Ranma came in range. From the ground came a blast of
Green Ki energy as Mousse jumped into the air in a spiral
pattern. Ranma flew into the air several hundreds of feet and
landed in a tree, then fell to the ground.
All eyes went to Ranma as he staggered about, then fell once
more. Shampoo, Ukyo and Akane rushed to examine his injuries.
Akane: Ranma!
Shampoo: Ranma, you ok?
Ukyo: Hey, Ranma honey, you don't look so good.
Ranma: Mmmmmmm.... I'm... fine... just...
Kipp: (walking up to Ranma) He got you pretty bad, Ranma. I didn't
expect that much force to come from that blow. (to Mousse) You
really didn't need to hit him that hard, you know.
Ukyo: WHY DID YOU LET THIS HAPPEN TO HIM!
Kipp: Relax! Dr. Tofu will have him fixed up in no time.
Cologne: Time enough for the rematch?
Akane: Rematch? Honestly, after something like that we should be
worried about Ranma!
Shampoo: Hmm... maybe stupid girl isn't so stupid after all.
Kipp: Nevermind your arguments with each other. Akane's right. We need
to get Ranma some medical attention. We'd better ask Dr. Tofu
when Ranma will be healed and ready for the rematch. It can
be posponed if necessary. We should also make sure that he comes
to the rematch, just to be on the safe side...
One week later, Ranma had completely healed from his bruises.
Fortunately, for him, there were no serious bones broken. The
rematch was scheduled, and Ranma went to it with a new
determination to reclaim his victory over Mousse. As he entered
the lot, Mousse stood waiting for him, as did everyone else.
Akane: Ranma, are you SURE you want to do this?
Ranma: I'm fine, Akane, just stay out of this!
Akane: (Angrier) Fine, be that way! (thinking) Honestly, and here I
was just trying to make sure he was alright!
Kipp: Alright. Does everyone here understand the terms of this rematch?
All nod in accordance.
Kipp: Very well then... Begin!
Ranma: Alright, time to get serious!
Ranma rushed Mousse and landed several heavy punches on him
sending him to the ground. Mousse got and launched daggers from
his hands. Ranma dodged all but one, which grazed his leg slightly.
Ranma: Ok, time to get you back!
A golden aura flared around Ranma as the Mouko Takabishita
powered up.
Ranma: Mouko Takabishita!
The blast of golden Ki energy roared toward Mousse. Mousse flipped
to a tree branch then jumped high into the air to avoid the
ball as it seared everything underneath. Mousse threw his chains
at Ranma, but Ranma dodged them easily. When Mousse landed, he
charged Ranma into a frenzy of punches. Ranma dodged them as he
slowly led Mousse into the spiral of the Hiyruu Shouten Ha.
Akane: He's going to use the Hiyruu Shouten Ha.
Kipp: That he is, but should Mousse have anything left in him when
he lands, Ranma is going to be in a world of pain.
Akane: Wha... What do you mean?
Kipp: (sigh) I helped Mousse learn two techniques, not one. The second
is far more powerful than the first, but at its own cost.
Ranma: (dodging fist, training potties, and a variety of other makeshift
weapons) five more steps...
Akane: You mean?!
Kipp: No, Ranma can defeat Mousse, but it's unlikely...
Ukyo: What's wrong you two? You look a little pale, especially you,
Akane.
Kipp: Nothing is wrong with us, except for our worries about Ranma.
Ukyo: Whattya mean? Isn't he going to use the Heaven blast of the Dragon?
Won't that work on Mousse?
Kipp: It'll work alright, but if Mousse lasts through it, Ranma will
have limited time.
Ukyo: But, what are the odds that...
Kipp: They're around 50-50. I trained him by blasting him with my
own techniques to get him to withstand something Ranma dished
out.
Just then the wind picked up as Mousse was thrown high into the
air by the awesome power of the Hiyruu Shouten Ha. Ranma knealt
on the ground taking a rest from the blow as Mousse landed
forming a crater.
Ukyo: There aren't a whole lot of people that can withstand that...
Akane: Did he...?
Kipp: (Spying slight movements from Mousse) Nope. Mousse can still
do it.
Akane & Ukyo: WHAT? After that?!
Kipp: Watch. You'll see what I mean.
Mousse slowly picked himself up, then stood straight ready
to continue.
Mousse: I'm not done yet! I... This is for... Sha... Shampoo!
Ranma: Give it a rest already.
Mousse: N...Never!
Ranma: (charging) Then I'm going to have to make you quit on your own!
Kipp hid his face in his hands, and shook his head. All eyes
focused on Ranma drawing nearer to Mousse. A red aura surrounded
the severely wounded, but still working Mousse. All Mousse had
left was sheer willpower... and the Flames of the Reborn Phoenix.
Mousse: (Standing up) Flames of the Reborn PHOENIX!
Mousse's battle aura flared into a tower of flames. The flames
spread rapidly like an explosion searing Ranma and sending him
into the wall, leaving a massive crack. As the flames went out
about 20 feet from Mousse, they turned into gold spheres and
rushed into Mousse surrounding him with gold light. Mousse then
stood as if he got a second wind ready for the oncoming attack,
and it came.
Modifying the Hiyruu Shouten Ha into a horizontal blast, Ranma
sent himself flying through a wind tunnel directly at Mousse, but
when Ranma prepared his attack, Mousse performed the Fist of the
Night Hawk hitting Ranma on the head and driving him, and the
airstream upward. Ranma landed on the ground in agony. Mousse had
won the battle once again.
Shampoo and Cologne stood in near shock at the sight they just
saw. Mousse, once a lowly nuissance, was now a legitimate and
repectable martial artist, but it was more. By Amazon Law, he
was now the person to marry Shampoo. Akane, Ukyo, Kipp and
Dr. Tofu rushed to take care of Ranma after the battle. Nabiki
and Fujiko stopped Mousse on his way to see Shampoo.
Fujiko: Now you listen to me. If I ever find out you're mistreating
Shampoo, I will beat the crap out of you twice and win Shampoo
as my bride, got that?
Mousse: (with wide eyes) Wha... WHAT?!
Fujiko: You heard me!
Mousse: I... I would never mistreat Shampoo! How... how could I? I...
I love her too much!
Fujiko: Then you have nothing to worry about.
The two watched Mousse walk off.
Nabiki: Please tell me you were kidding.
Fujiko: Of course I was, just don't let him know that!
Nabiki: Now all we need to do is teach him how to respect a lady.
Fujiko: Say, good idea! Wanna give me a hand with that?
Nabiki: It's going to cost you.
Fujiko: I know, I know, but let's discuss it later.
The next day Kipp, Ranma, and Akane were walking to the park
where Kipp and Ranma were going to continue their training.
Akane: It's a good thing Dr. Tofu was able to help you recover so
quickly.
Ranma: Yeah, but...
Ryoga: (walking up from behind) Hold it right there, Ranma!
Ranma: Ryoga. Welcome back. Enjoy your trip?
Ryoga: This is no time to be chummy, Ranma, this time... this time I'm
going to pay you back for everything you've done to me and
Akane!
Kipp and Akane's eyes widened slightly, then they exchanged
confused glances.
Akane & Kipp: What'd you do this time, Ranma?
Ranma: That's what I want to know!
Ryoga: This isn't for recent activities. This is for everything!
Ryoga charged at Ranma throwing several punches. Ranma dodged
the punches and retaliated with his own punches and kicks which
Ryoga in turn dodged. They seemed to chase each other around
each dodging the other's punch or kick and countering with their
own.
Kipp: Who is this... Ryoga, anyway?
Akane: He's a friend. An old classmate of Ranma's in Jr. High. This
all began when he came here last year with a grudge against
Ranma for not showing up at a fight Ranma waited three days
for, but Ryoga showed up four days late.
Kipp: Where was the fight at, Saigon?
Akane: (shaking her head) In the vacant lot behind Ryoga's house. He
has a poor sense of direction.
Kipp: Appearantly...
Ranma and Ryoga broke of their attacks as each backflipped into
a ready position.
Ryoga: Ranma... prepare to witness what my five weeks of training has
produced.
Ranma: Am I supposed to be impressed by this?
Ryoga: Be quiet you! Take this... (punching the ground) Idochikyu
Bakuken!
Ranma stood ready to block the fragments of what he thought
was the Bakusai Tenketsu. A pause, then the ground underneath
Ranma exploded sending rock fragments and Ranma flying into the
air. Kipp's face darkened as a worried expression appeared on
Akane's face. As Ranma got up, Akane's face brightened, but
Kipp's face remained unchanged.
Akane: Is something wrong, Kipp?
Kipp: Something is very wrong. How long have you known this, Ryoga?
Akane: About a year, why?
Kipp: That technique....
Akane: What about it? I've never seen him use it before.
Kipp: (appearantly not listening) It can't be....
Ranma: (standing on his feet looking harmed, but ok.) Well, it looks
like you learned something new, bacon breath.
Ryoga: Someday Ranma, you're going to learn not to make me ANGRY!
Ranma: Don't make me laugh!
Ranma charged with his chestnuts fist attack at blazing speed.
Ryoga, surprisingly, dodged many of them, but was hit by several
strong bursts and sent flying into a stone wall. Ryoga got up
with some, but minimal injury and launched three consecutive
strikes with the Idochikyo Bakuken assaulting Ranma with rock
fragments, and sending him backwards.
Ryoga then charged Ranma preparing to use the Bakusai Tenketsu,
but Ranma agily jumped over him and pounded him with several
punches from the Kachuu Tenshin Amaguriken. Ryoga tumbled over
himself, ran into a tree and caused the ground to explode, but
got up with out an incredible amount of injury.
Ryoga: You can't keep this up forever, Ranma! My training in the
mountians brought me up against far more harmful training than
before hand. Now I'll finish you! Kaze Kumo!
A dark cloud formed around Ryoga and slowly moved counterclock-
wise around Ranma. Ranma watched the cloud anticipating the
attack from Ryoga. Outside observers, however, were not fooled.
As Ranma watched the cloud, Ryoga went clockwise and launched
his attack on Ranma.
Ryoga landed several good punches and got good use of the
Bakusai Tenketsu before Ranma had much time to react to the
situation. After the assault, Ranma landed some twenty feet
away looking much more hurt than before.
Ranma: You're going to get it for that!
Ryoga: Ha, come and get me, Ranma.
Kipp: (walking between the two) Stop this.
Ranma: Kipp, what are you doing?! Get out of the way!
Ryoga: Who do you think you are?
Kipp: Don't think of this fight as over, think of it as postponed. I
will not allow one with the advantage of the Dragon School to
fight one without the advantage. It is only honorable to allow
Ranma the chance to learn the equivalent of what you had.
Akane: Dragon School?
Ranma: What are you talking about?
Kipp: The two techniques you just saw are techniques developed by the
Dragons of Night School of Martial Arts.
Ranma: Never heard of them
Ryoga: What are you trying to say?
Kipp: The same school who killed my parents.
All 3: WHAT?
Kipp: (to Ryoga) I am surprised a martial artist of your calibur would
willingly succum your will to them.
Ryoga: I didn't succum my will to anyone! An old man who was running
from his old school trained me!
Just then Anani skipps up from behind Ryoga.
Anani: (running up to Ryoga) Ryoga, my love!
Ryoga: Huh?!
Akane & Ranma: WHAT?!
Anani ran up and hugged Ryoga.
Akane: Ryoga, looks like you've found a girlfriend! I'm so happy for
you!
Ryoga: A...A...Akane?!
Akane: Don't worry, Ryoga. We'll always be good friends right?
Ryoga: (Thinking) Friends?! Oh, Akane if only you knew that the thought
of you saying that was enough to shatter my heart into a thousand
pieces... (aloud) Of, course we will.
Akane: Well, that's good.
Ryoga: (getting away from Anani) Anani... what are you doing here?!
Anani: Grandfather and I came here to see you. We opened an antiques
and bookstore nearby. (looking at the injured Ranma) He'll be
so happy that his training helped you defeat that bully, Ranma.
That is him isn't it.
Kipp: (thinking) Her grandfather trained Ryoga?
Ranma: Who are you calling a bully? I didn't do nothing to him!
Anani: You did plenty!
Kipp: (to Anani) May I inquire to speak to your grandfather?
Anani: Who are YOU?
Kipp: That is a question I am hoping your grandfather can help me
answer. Most of my history has been shrouded in mystery from
my mind.
Anani: I'll ask him. How about we meet at Ucchan's Okonomiyaki?
Kipp: That would be fine.
The trio of friend set aside their normal seats at the bar, and chose
a place with a long table. Ukyo greeted them, and they told her all
they knew about what was going on. Only Kipp seemed to have an idea,
but he did not enlighten anyone. Anani and her Grandfather walked in
and joined Ryoga, Kipp, Akane, and Ranma. They moved the table closer
to the bar so Ukyo could join in on the converstation.
Tsurin: So, what did you want to talk to me about?
Kipp: Do you recognize the family name, Hoshiryuu?
Tsurin: Why, yes. Why do you ask?
Kipp: Because that's my family.
Tsurin: Ah, so you're the one they've been after.
Akane: Who are "they?"
Tsurin: The Dragons of Night. A school of martial arts excelling in
wickedness. I was a member, until I discovered their true
intentions.
Kipp: Then they have attempted to silence you?
Anani: Yes, they've tried to kill grandfather for over fifteen years. They
haven't been around since he moved with us in Yanin, but we know
they're still hunting him.
Kipp: As they hunted and... killed my parents twelve years ago.
Tsurin: Twelve years, eh? That'd make you seventeen....
Kipp: Is something wrong? Our school trained me until I was 10, but the
rest of those years were with an Amazon.
Tsurin: They've trained you longer than you think, young Kipp. And soon the
day will come where you realize the true nature of your school.
Ukyo: So what is this school of yours anyway Kipp?
Kipp: We were known as the Dragons of Light, a school that rose to
protect all from the Dragons of Night. The school was named as
such just to show that one letter can mean the difference of
good and evil. Most of the members have been killed off by the
Dragons of Night... I was one fortunate enough to survive. I do
not know how many are left, though.
The room was quiet for a moment. The gang finished their okonomiyaki
and no one knew quite what to say. Kuno walks in.
Kuno: Saotome,
Ranma: What do you want, Kuno?
Kuno: (not hearing Ranma) And Akane Tendo! I regret that I cannot stay
long, but have you seen my sister anywhere around?
Akane: No.
Ranma: No, thankfully.
Kipp: I haven't seen her either.
Kuno: In the event that you see her, please tell her I am looking for her.
Kuno leaves.
Anani: Who was that guy?
Ranma: You don't want to know. Trust me.
Kipp: (rising) I'll be back. I need to get something.
Kipp got up and paid Ukyo for the meal then walked around the
table. As he walked, the edge of the wooden table began to
blacken. Tsurin is the only one who notices.
Tsurin: (calling to Kipp) WAIT!
Kipp was already out the door by the time he called. All eyes turned to
him.
Akane: What's wrong?
Ukyo: You sound as if he's going to die or something.
Tsurin: (urgently) Your friend is in more danger than you can imagine.
The benefits of the training of the Dragon schools is not
without their costs.
Ranma: What are you getting at?
Tsurin: Just trust me.
The group rushed outside of Ucchan's just in time to see Kipp
fall to the ground a couple of hundred feet away.
Akane: What's wrong with him.
Tsurin: The coming of age of the Dragon schools. After seventeen years of
age the Dragon blood with in them begins to cause the Burning Sleep.
(taking a blanket of gold foil from a small pack he is carrying)
Quickly, put this over him. This should allow us to carry him to
a medical facility.
Ranma: Why can't we just lift him?
Tsurin: The Burning Sleep isn't so named for no reason. Observe.
Tsurin took a stick lying on the ground and threw it near Kipp. As
the stick neared him, it burst into flames and was completely consumed
by the time it reached his body. Everyone stood with wide eyes.
Akane: Is there anyway to stop it?
Tsurin: No, there is no way. There are certain people who can withstand the
Burning, which is essentially the person's ki, but there is no cure.
Ranma: How long is this going to last?
Tsurin: Until his eighteenth birthday, unless we can find something to stop
it, or speed it up.
Akane: Speed it up?
Tsurin: Yes, the burning sleep resurfaces many thoughts embedded into his
mind during his training. Only one who is initiated by the Dragon
schools is capable of withstanding it. I remember hearing of a way
to speed it up to a four day process, but I do not know where the
texts lie, but first things first. Let's get him to a medical facility.
The gang wrapped Kipp in the metallic blanket from Tsurin and carried
Kipp to Dr. Tofu's and laid him out on it. They informed Dr. Tofu
on his condition, and asked for his help in identifying or finding
a way to speed it up.
DrTofu: Well, I'm not sure what to do. I've never seen anything like this.
If I'm going to find something to cure him with, you are going to
have to help me.
Akane: We'll do anything you ask, Dr. Tofu.
DrTofu: Good, then here is a list of sources you might be able to find some
information in. If you find these books, bring them here and Tsurin
and I will try to make the solution.
Akane: Well, let's go.
