I just go through my stories objectively, as though I was reading a
fic someone else posted. I find it easier to come across any spelling
or gramatical errors that way.
I know that my gramar is pretty good, but nobody can be perfect so I
have to re-read it with, as I said, objectivity. As far as my spelling,
it may not be perfect but I know that I'm pretty da-- good. The trouble
is that the worthless WebTV wireless keyboard I have doesn't always
register each key hit or sometimes gives a different character than the
one intended (i.e. some times when I hit 'k' I'll get 'p' on the screen,
or when I hit 'n' nothing will appear). It makes for tedious work when
I proof read my own work, and frankly, the ability to turn around and
read my work objectively is the only thing that keeps it from drivig me
to the mad house. If I couldn't read it as I would someone else's fic,
the pressure of being the person responsible for it being done right
would crush me (figuratively of course).
Don't ask how I can look at my own creations objectively, I can't
explain it. I can merey say that it is what works best for me and at
least three others fic writers I know of. I usually repeat the process
three times; once as though I was proof reading someone else's work,
once like I was a teacher grading a students work (those two may sound
virtually the same, but there really is a vast difference), and finally
I read it as if I were only reading it for entertainment. That is my
suggestion on how to scout for errors, if you have any questions on this
let me know through private e-mail and I will gladly explain what I can
(but you may want to be ready for a rather large response, because this
is nothing that I could give a quick summary of).
Sorry for the spam, Tybalt. I saw everyone throwing their ideas of
how to proof read their work and thought I might as well put in my two
cents. I hope you don't hold it against me.
Sincerely,
Akihiro
