How does the police system in Japan work?  I need to know for one of my
fanfics.

Well, police work is police work, so the science part
(forensics and such) is pretty much the same all over.
Also, like all police departments they like to rely
on confessions to resolve a case before it gets to
court. They still gather evidence and conduct witness 
interviews but prefer to get the suspects to confess
their crimes as it saves a great deal of time and
effort.

How the Japanese relate to each other does factor with
how police interact with the public and such.

The Japanese also have a national police system. All
local police departments have the same training and
uniforms. There is also a sort of national hierarchy,
with local departments reporting to a metroplitan
authority which reports to a prefectural authority
which reports to a national authority which reports
to the secutity or interior minister.

Also, there police kiosks every few blocks in Tokyo.
They basically provide directions for people who get
lost. They also patrol their neighborhoods and such.
Also firearms are extremely restricted in Japan as
are most deadly weapons. Makes me wonder how Nodoka
just simply went around with that katana.
