What month does the Japanese school year let out in? I know it starts in
April, but how long does it run?

It ends in late March. They only have a week or two
between school years. The next break is during
"Golden Week", the first week of May, all schools
and most offices go on vacation, preferably out of
town.

Then comes summer break during July-August. Then
a break over during New Year, then the end of the
school year.

The Japanese school week is Monday to Friday with
alternate Saturdays for the morning only. School
starts at about 8:30 with assembly. Lunch at 12:00
noon and school ends at 3:00. A few students in each
class (rotates each day) then does clean-up duty for
their classroom with a each class also handling
clean-up of common areas on a rotating basis.

Those not on clean-up duty attend their on-campus
club activities or go to cram schools to cram in
more homework.

Another note, each class stays in only one classroom
the whole day with science labs, PE and Home Ec being
exceptions. So the teachers have to move to a different
classroom each period.
