What do I look for in reviewing a story? Hmm...I can't really answer that.
I will agree though, spelling and grammar do really bother me. (Yeah, yeah,
pot calling the kettle black, I know...)
And now.....for my rant.
David, as much as I respect your arguments, I have to disagree with you.
But then, I took Taleswapper's essay and went through the following process:
1) It was well written, his arguments were well delivered.
2) For the most part, I can't argue with what he says. He's entitled to
think that way.
3) He's still wrong.
I, and I expect most of the readers out there, DON'T GIVE A DAMN about that
kind of thing. We all care about one thing when reading a story: Is it
entertaining?
"The True Cat Fist" has it's problems. Yes, it's stereotypical. Yes, the
author needs to run it through a spellchecker. Yes, the new character
steals the show. However, it's still a fun read. I find it entertaining.
So he steals the show - the new character is the CENTRAL character to the
story. It starts, ends, and revolves around him. He's the main
protagonist, not Ranma, not Akane, not anyone.
Now, these are all my opinions, and you're all entitled to disagree at your
pleasure (a warning, truly offensive flames get sent to your postmaster).
one question, have any of you made your opinion known to the author.
I to found it a story with good potential, and I also felt the main
character was to bloody perfect, but I wrote the author, and told him how I
felt, and suggested several things he might consider to make the character
a little more entertaining, and a lot less perfect.
Romantic trouble, he's suppose to be clueless around girls, not much sign
of that yet.
A weakness, something a chink in his perfect martial arts, a flaw that in
inheriant in the style itself. No one, or thing is perfect.
I may be doing you all an injustice, but commenting of someone's fic, who
is not as far as I know on the list, will do little to improve his story.
Send the remarks to him.
