You're overlooking a key element found in nine-tenths of 'idea' posts: the
"What does everyone think?" line.

Most people (most that I know, anyway) don't post story ideas for the purposes
of fobbing them off on others: they post because they want to test the waters,
see how people will react to the idea.

Case in point: Wheel of Time crossover/fusions.

Every time this gets brought up, it generally inspires a very large, somewhat
raucous debate. People pitch suggestions back and forth, things along the
lines of "How 'bout you make Amelia a Whitecloak!" or, "There is NO WAY Ranma
would survive a DAY as a novice without blowing SOMETHING up!" What all this
seves to accomplish is to demonstrate that yes, people want to see this thing
written, they'll definitly give C&C, and just basically that there's an
audience. I know for a fact that the huge outpouring of response on this idea
has inspired at least one person to actually WRITE the bloody thing, and if a
posted idea inspires at least one fic, doesn't that make it all worthwhile?

I'll grant that lately a lot of people have been posting some incredibly
stupid-ass story ideas. But that doesn't invalidate the entire concept of idea
posting altogether.

Besides, like it or not, story ideas ARE fic-related, and in the end, isn't
that what we're all gathered here to discuss?

Think about it.
