The name Ranma originated from the term Random Number. Rumiko-sensei 
kept Ran (chaotic;messed up) and changed Ma (Number) to Ma (horse). I 
think she did that because it was too embarrassing to have a name like 
"Random Number." 
So with that in mind, I think we may have a better picture as to why 
Ranma is the Way it is.
