To the scholar who reads my words, greetings.  What you read now
is not, nor should it be taken as, a legend passed down through the
generations, growing with each telling.  I personally witnessed much of
it, and much of the remainder was vouchsafed to me by dear friends, for
whom I am glad to swear to their honesty.

	As to mine own, I am a complete liar.  Should this cause you to
disregard this as the ramblings of an unrepentant prevaricator, may your
dreams be sweet.

	This is a story of true love.

	Not *my* true love, sadly, for neither of the ladies involved had
any interest in me, despite my great admiration for their persons, and I
hasten to add, their characters.

	It is also a story of the most unrepentant blackguard whom ever I
did meet, of magic both grim and bright, and of a spot of mild larceny.
This last, dear reader, is the primary reason which I have seen to it that
this account shall be sent to the great library at Doissetep, since the
worthy scholars there probably shall not alert the constabulary of those
places in which I practiced my trade.

	But it is, more than any other thing, a tale of the truest love
and the truest lovers whom ever I did know, and of how their love
conquered black magic ... the blackest magic that ever I did -- but the
worthy reader has already guessed.

	I have chosen to name this story after the fashion of the sage
Aesop, since like his, it is at its heart a cautionary tale.  This tale is

                         THE RABBIT AND THE RAVEN

and I bid all those who read it to pay close heed to the moral:

	"The man who doubts true love may have other unpleasant habits."
